Food & Drink Industry celebrates 25th Anniversary of the Single Market

As European leaders discuss progress made with regard to the EU Single Market during the European Council summit today and tomorrow (22-23 March), FoodDrinkEurope is seizing the opportunity of the Single Market’s 25th Anniversary to celebrate the progress it has brought to businesses and citizens at large, at an event tonight in Brussels.

CEEP addresses the pillar of social rights at the Tripartite Social Summit

At the Tripartite Social Summit, CEEP President Katherina Reiche addressed the President of the European Council Donald Tusk, the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker and the Prime Minister of Bulgaria Boyko Borisov with the main messages of providers and employers of public services and SGIs on the implementation of the European Pillar of Social Rights.

Ms Reiche focused her speech on three key messages:

Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament regret the general escalation of violence in the city. Sometimes this violence is connected to the drug trade, but very often, it is directed against people engaged in the defence of human rights.

Parliament backs new rules to make EU political parties truly European

The European Parliament’s constitutional affairs committee today backed new rules to make the next EU elections more European. The committee voted on a series of measures regarding how European political parties and foundations are managed. The proposals will now be voted on by the whole Parliament in the April Plenary session.

In January 2016, following its acquisition of Alstom Power, General Electric targeted 6,500 European jobs to be cut. The restructuring plan was supposedly meant to put GE energy-related activities back on the right track. And yet, in December 2017, another massive cost reduction plan was introduced which is targeting an additional 5,500 European jobs. In just two years, no fewer than 12,000 jobs in GE energy businesses were put on the chopping block across Europe.

Victory for social rights as S&Ds lead drive to reject European Services e-card

Today the Socialists and Democrats scored a victory for social rights after having successfully led the drive to reject the Commission’s proposal for an e-card in a vote in the internal market committee. Aimed at making the cross-border provision of business and construction services easier and removing administrative burdens, the e-card would de facto establish the country of origin principle by undermining host-country control and enforcement tools, leading to more cross-border social fraud and dumping.

The S&D MEPs welcome Commissioner Moscovici's proposal to tax the giant tech companies where their revenues are generated in Europe in a move to prevent tax avoidance.
 
The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament welcome this initiative responding to the growing concern of citizens and members states, but strongly believe that only an agreement on harmonising the corporate tax system will present a lasting solution.
