S&D: When Juncker goes, the Secretary General post must be reassessed according to new rules based on transparency, collegiality and equal opportunities

Following today's hearing of Commissioner Gunther Oettinger in the budgetary control committee on the Selmayr affair, the S&D Group underlines its disappointment with the method used in the appointment of the Secretary General. The Group also called for a reassessment of this post, once the Juncker Commission finishes its mandate, according to new rules - to be presented by 2018 - based on transparency, collegiality and equal opportunities.

EU should show more solidarity with Turkey’s democrats and urge Erdogan to stop military offensive in Syria

The S&D Group does not expect big breakthroughs at the ongoing EU-Turkey summit in Bulgaria. We regret no conditions were set prior to the meeting, and no mandate was given by member states to EU leaders Donald Tusk and Jean-Claude Juncker. Still, we call the European Union to show more solidarity with Turkey’s democrats and urge President Tayyip Erdogan to stop his military offensive in Syria.
 
Ahead of the summit Kati Piri, S&D spokesperson on Turkey and the European Parliament rapporteur on Turkey said:
 

S&Ds want to protect workers’ health from diesel fumes

Tomorrow, the Socialists and Democrats in the employment and social affairs committee will back a European Parliament proposal to protect workers against diesel fumes in the workplace. The new law will also set new limits for exposure to several substances that cause cancer and mutations (epichlorohydrin, ethylene dibromide, ethylene dichloride, 4,4-methylenedianiline, trichloroethylene).
 
S&D Group spokesperson on this issue, and vice-chair of the employment and social affairs committee, Marita Ulvskog, said:
