S&Ds want to reinforce the strategic alliance between the EU and Latin America

The EU-Latin America Parliamentary Assembly (Eurolat) meeting in Panama finishes today. Over four days, 90 members of Parliament, from both continents, have searched for solutions to our common challenges, such as inequalities, justice, fighting impunity and establishing a common research area between Europe, Latin America and Caribbean countries, as well as globalisation governance. 
 
S&D MEP Ramón Jáuregui, who co-chairs the Eurolat assembly, said from Panama:
 

Udo Bullmann: Democratic choice in Brazil is the right of the people

Later today, the Supreme Court in Brazil will decide on the fate of former president and former chairman of the Brazilian Workers’ Party (PT) Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who has been accused of passive corruption in a highly controversial lawsuit.
 
S&D president Udo Bullmann said:
 
“It has been a very controversial process. We worry about the possible politicisation of the justice system in Brazil and rumours about the interference of the military.
 

S&Ds call for an independent investigation into the killing of 18 Palestinians and for a resolution in the April plenary session

The Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament join UN Secretary Seneral António Guterres and EU High Representative Federica Mogherini in their call for an independent and transparent investigation into the recent tragic deaths of Palestinians at the Gaza border.
 
The S&D Group will also propose a debate and urgent resolution on the topic during the next plenary session of 16-19 April in Strasbourg.

The Western Balkans must have a European perspective, say S&Ds

The Socialists and Democrats today stressed their support for a European path for the Western Balkans at a two-day high-level PES conference in Podgorica and Tirana, which was attended by Prime Ministers, political leaders and representatives from the Social Democratic family from the region and from the European Union. The conference was a preparatory step towards the EU-Western Balkans summit that will be taking place in Sofia in May.
 
Speaking at the conference, Knut Fleckenstein, S&D spokesperson for foreign affairs, said:

PES supports further Balkan integration, encourages EU pre-accession reforms

The Party of European Socialists stressed its support for a European path for the Western Balkans at the two day EU-PES Balkans high-level conference in Podgorica and Tirana. Prime Ministers from the PES family and leaders of the social-democratic parties from the region, PES and S&D group representatives, attended the event co-hosted by both our associate members – Socialists’ Democratic Party of Montenegro and the Albanian Socialist party.

PES president Sergei Stanishev said during the discussions:

CLEPA strongly supports and urges the review of the General Safety Regulation[1] as a driver to further implement vehicle technical requirements, with the aim of increasing vigorously vehicle safety performances.
 
The introduction of effective and cost-efficient safety measures, which are already available in the market, would bring tangible benefits:
 
  • Firstly, and most importantly, the reduction of road fatalities and the mitigation of injuries resulting from road accidents.
