Socialists and trade unions are called upon to secure workers’ rights amidst digital revolution, urges Udo Bullmann ahead of 1st of May

 
Speaking ahead of Labour Day on 1st of May, the Group leader of the Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, Udo Bullmann, said:

Commissioner Arias Cañete welcomes the Refining Industry’s Vision 2050 and expressed his confidence that the industry could contribute to meeting the long-term climate objectives

Brussels, 25 April 2018: The eighth edition of the EU Refining Forum which attracted around 130 participants representing Member States, the Commission, Industry and other stakeholders gave the opportunity to the refining industry to outline its Vision 2050, a long-term strategy for low carbon liquid fuels and other refinery products, progressively using new feedstocks to reduce carbon emissions from the transport sector and contributing to meeting the EU’s overall 2050 climate objectives.

German offshore wind auction strengthens case for accelerated build-out

BRUSSELS, 27 APRIL 2018 – Germany today announced the results of its latest offshore wind auction. Six projects won. They’ve a total capacity between them of 1.6 GW and are split evenly between the North Sea and Baltic Sea. 

The lowest winning bid was €0 MW/h premium above the wholesale power price and the highest was €98.30 MW/h (total price including premium and wholesale price). The prices do not include the costs of the grid connection. The German state pays for that. The mathematical average of the six winning prices was €46.6/MWh.

The ban on bee-killing pesticides is a victory for citizens and for biodiversity

Socialists and Democrats welcome the decision taken by a majority of the 28 national experts to back the ban on neo-nicotinoid pesticides. The S&D Group recently led the European Parliament’s demand to exclude all pesticides with scientifically proven negative effects on bees, and have fully supported the citizens’ petition to introduce such a ban.

Facebook and Twitter need to be accountable for the spread of fake news on their platforms

S&D MEPs have welcomed that the European Commission finally came forward with proposals to tackle the dissemination of fake news on online platforms such as Facebook or Twitter. The aim of supporting media literacy, encourage independent fact checking and supporting quality journalism are all measures strongly supported by the S&D Group. However, concerns remain over how the proposed system of self-regulation of online platforms would be enforced and what the consequences would be for companies that fail to take meaningful action.
