Independent press is essential for a functioning democracy; the EU must do more to protect it

The European Parliament today backed a report calling for the EU to do more to protect journalists and independent media in the EU. The report was voted on world press freedom day and at a time that the independent media is increasingly under threat, both in Europe and around the world.
 
The S&D Group spokesperson for the report, Caterina Chinnici MEP, said:
 

Animals should be spared cruel tests by the cosmetic industry, says S&D MEP Miriam Dalli

In many countries outside of Europe, animals are still submitted to painful experiments to produce new lipsticks or shampoos. Rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, rats and mice are commonly submitted to such experiments for tests mostly related to skin and eye irritation.
 
The European Union has proved that these cruel tests are unnecessary, and this is why the S&D Group has promoted a resolution, voted on today by the European Parliament, calling for a global ban on animal testing on cosmetics and toiletries.
 

S&Ds: member states must act to protect child migrants

During a debate in the European Parliament in Brussels, S&D MEPs today urged EU member states to do more to protect child migrants arriving in Europe.

The protection of EU financial interests (PIF) is essential to guarantee the good management of public money and serve the interests of EU citizens. In this year’s report drafted by Gilles Pargneaux, two major steps forward were welcomed: the adoption of the PIF directive and the creation of the European public prosecutor’s office (EPPO). However, it is regrettable that not all member states decided to take part in the latter.

Today the European Commission released its proposal for a European budget for the next seven years.

PES president Sergei Stanishev said:

"The Commission's budget proposal is now on the table and negotiations can begin. The aim should be to strike a deal before the next parliamentary elections -- but we must avoid repeating the    experience from 2014, when the whole process was significantly delayed.

Bladder cancer patients call for action and awareness

A coalition of people affected by bladder cancer is calling for a drive to change attitudes towards bladder cancer and to increase awareness of the disease.

The European Cancer Patient Coalition revealed today that late diagnosis is one of the factors that is leading to poor outcomes for people with bladder cancer.

Worldwide, someone is diagnosed with bladder cancer every 72 seconds. In Europe, someone is diagnosed every 4 minutes, and someone dies of bladder cancer every 10 minutes.
