S&Ds score victory for European workers: Equal pay for equal work at the same place to become reality

oday, the European Parliament endorsed new rules for posted workers that will create fair conditions and fair competition for European workers and companies. The Socialists and Democrats had led the campaign to close loopholes in the outdated legal framework for workers temporarily providing a service in another EU country, and succeeded in considerably improving the Commission proposal.

Young farmers are key in the future Common Agriculture Policy, say S&Ds

Young farmers represent a great potential for the agriculture sector, as they are keener to innovate and diversify. Hence, the new Common Agriculture Policy must embody a strong and concrete policy to support their development across Europe. In the EU, only 6% of farmers are under 35 years old, whilst more than half of the total is already over 55. We desperately need a generation turnover.
 

S&Ds tighten vetting of foreign take-overs to protect security and jobs

This evening, the international trade committee in the European Parliament approved new rules on the screening of direct foreign investment. Acting on mounting concerns about foreign investors, notably state-owned enterprises, taking over European companies with key technologies for strategic reasons, in February 2017 Socialist and Social Democrat ministers launched an initiative to set up a European mechanism to protect critical European assets against investments that could be detrimental to legitimate interests of the EU or its member states.

S&Ds want to introduce specific targets for single-use plastic reduction

The EU is at the forefront of the global fight against plastic litter, but unfortunately, it is also one of the main responsible actors: Europe produced 52 million tonnes, the equivalent of 23% of the world’s plastics, in 2015 and a lot of it just ended up in the oceans. Bottles, bags and straws endanger not only marine life but also human health.
 

Europaspåret is presented as a solution to increase freight traffic following the new Fehmarn Belt connection

At a major infrastructure conference, Fehmarn Belt Days, the city of Landskrona will participate in a seminar together with SJ, KTH, Serneke and Copenhagen Airport to discuss the need for additional Öresund connections when the Ferhmarn Belt fixed link is in operation. This new link is expected to create additional traffic as the Öresund passage can become a bottleneck in the European railroad network. Europaspåret is the only connection that offers a solution to the increasing freight traffic by rail.
