The EU will not be blackmailed, say S&Ds to Trump

Speaking at a European Parliament plenary debate in Strasbourg, ahead of the deadline for EU exemptions from US punitive tariffs on steel and aluminium this Friday (June 1), the Socialists and Democrats reiterated their call on the EU to stand firm and not to negotiate under pressure and to protect European workers. 
 
S&D spokesperson for EU-USA trade relationships and chair of the European Parliament’s trade committee, Bernd Lange, said:
 

The S&D Group calls for the end of violence and for democratic reforms in Nicaragua

Following another day of violence in Nicaragua, with fire weapons used against students, Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament have called for the end of repression against demonstrators. During a plenary debate, they have condemned the State violence of the government led by Daniel Ortega, which has left over 80 dead and almost one thousand wounded.
 
The S&D Group also announced that it will support a Parliamentary resolution to be put to a vote on Thursday. 
 

European Commission should assess if Israel is complying with EU Association Agreement

During today’s plenary session debate in Strasbourg on the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and the status of Jerusalem, the S&D Group called on the European Commission to assess whether the EU-Israel Association Agreement is fulfilled in terms of respect for human rights.
 
S&D vice-president Elena Valenciano said:

The legislative proposals for the future European Cohesion Policy 2021- 2027 pave the way for a more simple, innovative and secure investment programme for all the regions in Europe. However, the S&D Group is strongly concerned about the tough reductions for investments and deeply disappointed to see again the macroeconomic conditionality in the Commission’s proposal. Following today’s legislative proposal presentation, Constanze Krehl, S&D’s coordinator in the committee for regional development (REGI) in the European Parliament, stated:
 

The S&D Group backs the continuity of the peace process started by Santos in Colombia

Following the first round of the presidential elections in Colombia, and ahead of the official visit of the departing president Juan Manuel Santos to the European Parliament, the S&D Group underlines that the South American country is living a historic moment and it thanks president Santos for his efforts to bring about peace.
 
Ramón Jáuregui MEP, who co-chairs the EU-Latin America Parliamentary Assembly (Eurolat) said:

In a surprise move last Thursday, it was announced that the European Parliament would vote today on the Revision of the Posting of Workers Directive.
