"The UK must finally present a clear offer"

Berlin/Brussels, July 4, 2018 

Industry in Germany and Europe urgently needs clarity on future relations between the EU and the United Kingdom. With regard to Prime Minister Theresa May's visit to Berlin, the German mechanical engineering association VDMA calls on the British side to finally state a clear and realistic offer for the time after the Brexit.

Changeover: Dr Peter Goetz from BSH Europe takes the lead as the new APPLiA President

Dr Peter Goetz, the Executive Vice President of BSH Europe, has been officially appointed to be the new president of APPLiA, the association representing the home appliance manufacturers in Europe.
 
To ensure a smooth transition, APPLiA General Assembly also supported the candidature of the President’s predecessor, Dr Reinhard Zinkann, Miele’s coproprietor, as Vice President. In the last four years, Zinkann has been the leader driving the Association towards its full brand transformation and modernisation.
 

Parliament backs reform to make EU elections more transparent and democratic

Today, the European Parliament with an absolute majority of its component members passed a reform of EU electoral law, strengthening the European dimension of EU elections and rendering them more transparent and democratic.
 
S&D Group spokesperson for constitutional affairs and Parliament negotiator for the reform, Jo Leinen, said:

S&Ds: high time to stop the violation of the rights of indigenous peoples around the world

Today the European Parliament voted with a huge majority its first ever report devoted to indigenous peoples. Although its population is estimated to be over 370 million people in over 70 countries worldwide, their rights to land, territories and resources are too often violated, especially in the context of globalisation. The S&Ds call on the EU to promote the rights of indigenous peoples in the dialogue with all third countries, including in trade and cooperation agreements.  
 
S&D MEP and the EP rapporteur, Francisco Assis, said:

S&Ds call on the Venezuelan government to urgently accept a humanitarian aid plan

During a plenary debate in Strasbourg tonight, Socialists and Democrats will urge the EU to continue its financial support to Venezuela, and to increase it if needed. They will also urge the Venezuelan government to accept an immediate agreement to urgently provide humanitarian aid.
 
The S&D Group expresses its solidarity with the Venezuelan people, and regret the grave crisis it is going through. According to the UN, 61.2% of Venezuelans live in extreme poverty; mortality has raised 60% and child mortality 30%.
 

Udo Bullmann to Sebastian Kurz: Don’t let the xenophobes and populists of FPÖ divide our Europe!

Speaking in the European Parliament in Strasbourg today with Chancellor Sebastian Kurz on the start of the Austrian EU Presidency, S&D Group president Udo Bullmann, said:
 
“Presiding over the European Council is an honour and a big responsibility - we call on the Austrian Government to live up to that.
 
“The Austrian Government has to make the unity of Europe and the wellbeing of the European people a priority of its EU Presidency.
