Parliament puts forward ambitious proposals to enable parents and carers to take fairly compensated paternity, parental and/or carers’ leave

The S&Ds led today a majority in the employment and social affairs committee calling for an ambitious and progressive Work-Life Balance Directive to enable working parents and carers to balance their professional and private lives. Under the rules, parents and carers across the EU will be able to take leave that is fairly compensated. They will also be able to request flexible working arrangements in order to take care of their children and/or seriously ill or injured relatives and friends.

CLEPA on the vote on opinions on CO2 standards: Tough balancing act

The committee for Transport and Tourism in the European Parliament has voted yesterday to confirm the Commission’s proposed reduction targets for cars and vans, to call for more flexible rules on eco-innovations and to request the Commission to introduce Life-Cycle Analysis and Well-to-wheel data in emissions regulation. The committee for Industry, Research and Energy did not adopt a position after a vote which overall had produced contradictory results.

S&D MEPs express solidarity with the families of the victims of the recent violence in Nicaragua

Nicaragua has experienced a peak of violence in recent days, as a result of which at least 17 people have been killed in the cities of Diriamba and Jinotepe and dozens of people have been assaulted, including representatives of the Catholic Church. The latter were performing mediation tasks in the two affected cities, which were besieged by alleged supporters of the Nicaraguan Government.

Despite rapid approach of Brexit, UK SMEs are failing to go global

 
  • More than a quarter (26%) of UK small businesses (SMEs) are not participating in international trade
  • In the run up to Brexit, 46% of UK SMEs feel more information and support on potential opportunities would encourage them to participate in international trade and 41% feel the Government securing new trade deals would.

Parliament backs new rules to crack down on money laundering and organised crime

The European Parliament’s civil liberties, justice and home affairs committee, today backed two reports designed to make it harder for organised criminals and terrorists to access their illegally gained funds. The proposals will make it easier for authorities to freeze and confiscate illegally obtained assets across borders and crack down on money laundering. An agreement between the Council, Commission and Parliament was reached on the new laws last week.
