S&Ds defend pan-European personal pensions to make a greater difference during retirement age

The Socialists and Democrats in the economic and monetary affairs committee abstained on the vote of the pan-European personal pension product (PEPP), for the report as supported by the right wing did not offer sufficient guarantees to savers. The PEPP is supposed to offer simple and innovative choice to citizens when saving for retirement and should be a third pillar voluntary personal pension complementary to the existing national pensions that could be bought across the EU.
 

S&Ds ensure products are safe for consumers and mutually recognised across the EU

Yesterday, S&Ds led a coalition in the internal market and consumer protection committee aiming at ensuring the safety of products across the European Union. Under the new framework, member states will have to provide enhanced market surveillance for products available on the market and for online products. The report on mutual recognition guarantees that safe and lawfully marketed goods will be mutually recognised in other member states.
 

Online Sales of Non-Compliant Products - a Workshop of Experts will present problems and solutions

EucoLight is organizing a workshop on 17 Oct in Brussels to discuss problems with online non-compliance. Case studies from several sectors will highlight the possible extent of the problem, including VAT non-payment, non-compliance with safety standards, and WEEE freeriding. Policy makers and key stakeholders will debate challenges, visions and possible solutions to ensure a level playing field.

Parliament backs proposals to combat credit card and mobile payment fraud

The European Parliament’s civil liberties, justice, and home affairs committee today backed new proposals to combat credit card fraud and counterfeiting. The new law will also cover other non-cash payments such as direct debits, mobile payments, or transactions involving virtual currencies.

The European Parliament’s committees for economic and monetary affairs and civil liberties, justice, and home affairs today backed tighter rules for those carrying or sending large amounts of cash into and out of the European Union.
 
The new regulation is another element in the fight against money laundering and the financing of terrorism. The agreement will be voted on by the Parliament as a whole during its plenary session in Strasbourg next week.
