NGOs saving lives of migrants across the Mediterranean Sea - S&Ds nominees for the 2018 Sakharov Prize

Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament jointly nominated eleven NGOs that protect human rights and save lives of refugees and migrants across the Mediterranean Sea for the 2018 Sakharov Prize.
 

S&Ds welcome the Commission’s proposal to fight money laundering across borders and call for enhanced power and additional resources for the EU’s supervisory institutions

Following the publication of the European Commission’s proposal today to further strengthen the supervision of EU financial institutions, S&Ds called for additional resources to allow them to better fulfil their tasks. S&D MEPs welcomed the intention of the proposal to tackle money laundering and disrupt the financing of terrorist groups, but highlighted the need to fill the gaps in the EU supervisory framework.

Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament are leading the transition to a circular economy, where all products are designed to be either recycled, re-used or remanufactured. S&D MEP Simona Bonafè was the author of four parliamentary reports for a circular economy, and she called on the Commission to present a specific strategy to phase out plastic waste. Tomorrow, the plenary of the European Parliament will vote on this new strategy.

The European Parliament today voted to trigger Article 7 (1) of the EU Treaty against the Hungarian government. It is the first time that the Parliament has taken this step against a national government. It comes after a sustained and systemic attack by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on the press, universities, judiciary, NGOs and other independent institutions.
 

Trump puts at risk EU-US partnership that needs to be preserved

With S&Ds support, the European Parliament backed a resolution today stating that although many decisions by the Trump administration put in jeopardy the international rules-based multilateral order, we have to preserve a strong EU-US partnership.
