The fight for transparency in the EU must be stepped up

Following a meeting of leaders of European Parliament Groups, S&D MEPs made clear that the work to make EU decision-making processes more transparent must be stepped up. In particular, the Group stressed that interaction between lobbyists and EU officials and MEPs must be done in an open and transparent way. The Group stressed that the ongoing negotiations between the European Parliament, Commission and Council must not be put on hold.

S&Ds lead large majority to end illegal imports of cultural goods in the EU

The Socialists and Democrats led today a large cross-party majority in the trade and internal market committees to set up rules and protect cultural goods sold and imported in the EU from third countries. The new rules will ensure that imports of cultural artefacts are subject to the same controls along all EU external borders, thereby protecting the world cultural heritage and strengthening the fight against terrorism financing.
 
The European Parliament’s co-author of the report on imports of cultural goods, Alessia Mosca MEP, said:

Investments in port facilities could help offshore wind cut costs by 5.3%

Investments of €0.5-€1bn in new port infrastructure could help the offshore wind sector to cut costs by up to 5.3%. This is according to figures released by the WindEurope Ports Platform at the Global Wind Summit in Hamburg.

S&D Group remembers Jo Cox’s life and legacy

The city of Brussels today recognised the life of former UK Labour MP Jo Cox, naming a square in her honour. Jo worked in Brussels, both in the European Parliament as an assistant for former Labour MEP Glenys Kinnock and for Oxfam international.
 
Speaking at the inauguration of Jo Cox Square in the centre of Brussels, S&D Group leader Udo Bullmann said:
 

S&Ds: Set our citizens free from pesticides in urban areas. The EU should invest more in networking best practices at European level

Organised by the S&D with the valuable contribution of PAN Europe (Pesticide Action Network), the first round table on the theme ‘Pesticides free cities: European policies, local strategies and future prospects’ was held at the European Parliament in Brussels. Following the round table, the agriculture coordinator Nicola Caputo, the president of the pesticides committee and S&D vice president, Eric Andrieu, the vice president of the environment committee Pavel Poc and the rapporteur for the implementing report on SUP Directive Jytte Guteland, in a joint declaration stated: 

Costs to rise and emissions to triple in power sector by 2030 should UK abandon nuclear power in favour of a mix of wind and gas, study says

LONDON, September 27, 2018 – Should the UK heed the calls to abandon nuclear power, in favour of the seemingly cheaper mix of natural gas and renewables, electricity generation costs would rise by 15% and power sector carbon intensity would rise from 51 gCO2/kWh to 186gCO2/kWh in 2030. The report, commissioned by The New Nuclear Watch Institute (NNWI), was launched in London on Thursday.

S&D Group meets representatives from Slovakia, Romania and Greece

n the invitation of the S&D, the Prime Minister of Slovakia Peter Pellegrini, the Prime Minister of Romania Viorica Dăncilă as well as the party leader of the ‘Movement of Change’ in Greece Fofi Gennimata, visited the Group meeting to discuss various topics on the European agenda as well as recent developments in their respective countries.
