Tanja Fajon leads S&D delegation to Niger to assess the impact of EU programmes on migration, security and development

From Monday November 19, S&D vice-president on migration, Tanja Fajon, will lead a Group mission to Niger in the framework of the Socialists & Democrats' commitment to build a new and strategic partnership with Africa.
The S&D delegation will also be formed by the S&D development coordinator Norbert Neuser, S&D foreign affairs coordinator, Knut Fleckenstein, and vice-president of the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly, Juan Fernando López Aguilar.

Bullmann: Now is the time to deliver on the reform of the Eurozone

Socialists and Democrats in Chemnitz today: Together with citizens for democracy and freedom!

In the context of the S&Ds #EuropeTogether initiative, S&D Group president, Udo Bullmann, and S&D MEP from Saxony, Constanze Krehl, will meet with citizens in Chemnitz to discuss about Democracy and Europe.
The event is part of the S&Ds “Democracy Month” and will be organised in form of a “Go Local” event in the city. One of the key topics will be the threat posed by nationalist and far right forces.

S&Ds defend EU workers' right in the face of challenge from conservatives in the European Parliament

Today, the Socialists and Democrats led a majority in the European Parliament to defend a report aiming at improving working conditions and establishing new rights for millions of European workers, in spite of a challenge from the EPP and the ECR. The S&Ds denounced efforts from the right wing to block progress on a legislative proposal that will pave the way to better protection for workers in precarious jobs and fulfil the commitments made under the European Social Pillar.

S&Ds lead the vote to strengthen rail passengers’ rights in the EU

Today, the European Parliament backed the report drafted by S&D MEP Bogusław Liberadzki aiming to reinforce passengers' rights. The existing regulation, from 2009, introduced important rights for passengers, but there are loopholes in the implementation that the vote today intends to overcome. 

Bangladesh must stop crackdown on civil society, media and critics

On the request of the Socialists and Democrats, the European Parliament voted today a resolution on the deteriorating human rights situation in Bangladesh, where the government has intensified its crackdown on civil society, media, and critics. The imprisoning of Shahidul Alam, an internationally recognised photojournalist who did nothing but criticise the authorities for the use of violence against protesting students, is just one recent example.
