Parliament appoints Andrea Enria as Chair of the Supervisory Board of the ECB

The Socialists and Democrats backed Andrea Enria’s appointment as the new head of the ECB Banking Supervision today during a vote in the economic and monetary affairs committee. If approved by the Parliament and confirmed by the Council, Mr Enria will succeed Danièle Nouy as Chair of the Supervisory Board on 1 January 2019 for a non-renewable five-year term. The European Parliament will finalise its approval during the mini plenary in Brussels on 29 November.
 

Hungarian government is acting incredibly irresponsibly in offering asylum to former Macedonian PM

Leading S&D MEPs are deeply concerned by the news that the Hungarian government has granted asylum to the former Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski. Mr Gruevski, who left power in 2016 following widespread protests, fled to Hungary after being sentenced to prison in Skopje on corruption charges. 
 

EU will make it easier for cities to enforce their air quality policies

More and more cities in Europe are trying to impose restrictions on highly contaminating vehicles. However, it is difficult to enforce these measures as long as these vehicles continue to cross through cities without any restriction. 

Better co-ordination of social security systems will strengthen workers' protection and facilitate labour mobility, say S&Ds

The Socialists and Democrats led today a large majority in the employment and social affairs committee to ensure that each citizen has fair access to social security regardless of where she or he lives. The S&Ds strongly objected any attempts to introduce the indexation of family benefits in the place of residence of the children, as well as attempts to reduce overall social standards on the basis of false and demagogic claims aimed at stigmatising jobseekers.

S&Ds champion yet another proposal to better protect Europeans from exposure to cancer-causing substances at work

The Socialists and Democrats in the employment committee broadly backed today the third proposal of the European Commission this parliamentary term to protect European workers from exposure to an additional five carcinogenic or mutagenic substances in the workplace. The new rules are expected to improve the health of over 1 million workers and prevent over 22.000 cases of work-related illness. 

European Labour Authority must protect workers’ rights and ensure fair labour mobility

The Socialists and Democrats backed today a proposal to set up an efficient and effective European Labour Authority (ELA) in order to end labour exploitation and ensure fair mobility of workers across the EU. The ELA shall promote cooperation between member states regarding labour mobility in the EU. In addition to monitoring and enforcement competences, the ELA will also facilitate access to information for workers and employers, support cooperation between member states and help settle disputes when they arise.

New whistleblower protections must cover also those exposing abuse of workers’ rights

The European Parliament's committee on legal affairs today backed new proposals to protect whistleblowers reporting breaches of European Union law. The S&D Group has been pushing for years for these protections, in the face of opposition from right-wing groups.
