S&Ds support a net zero-carbon economy by 2050 but demand actions for a just transition

Socialists and Democrats welcome the European Commission proposal to end greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. However, S&Ds want to make sure that the transition to a net zero-carbon economy will benefit all citizens and it will not create new inequalities. On the contrary: it should contribute to bridging the growing gap between rich and poor and reinforcing social cohesion among citizens and among regions.
 

CEEP reacts to the European Commission's plan "A Clean Planet for All"

The European Commission published today [28 November 2018] its “Long Term Strategy for a Clean Planet for All”. This long-term strategy focuses on greenhouse gas emissions’ reduction and is the first step towardsthe implementation of the UN Paris Climate Agreement. Commenting on the report, Valeria Ronzitti, CEEP General Secretary, said:

Wind energy ready to step up to Europe's decarbonisation challenge

The European Commission today called for the bloc to aim for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 in its new decarbonisation strategy.
The EU’s newly-agreed renewable energy and energy efficiency targets put the bloc on track to cut emissions in 2050 by 60% compared to 1990. But that will still not be enough to meet the Paris target of keeping temperature rises to well below 2 degrees.

Leading S&Ds are calling for the European Commission and European Parliament to look into the allegations of illegal selling of passports in Bulgaria. Leading politicians from the governing party have been dragged into the scandal, including Deputy Prime Minister Krasimir Karakachanov, the former justice minister Ekaterina Zaharieva (now foreign minister) and EPP/GERB MEP Andrey Kovatchev, who is also vice-president of the EPP Group in the European Parliament.
