The EU General Court confirms our criticism on the permissibility of harmful diesel emissions in the EU

Today Socialists and Democrats welcomed the ruling of the General Court according to which the European Commission exceeded its powers by allowing much higher NOX emissions. It weakened emission limits through the back door by granting the car industry very large deviation margins to emit the legal limits established the new Real Driving Emissions tests regulation. With this ruling, the General Court upholds the actions brought by the cities of Paris, Brussels and Madrid against the Commission.

S&Ds urge heads of state and government to make progress on Eurozone reforms

Ahead of the Euro Summit on 14 December, the Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament call for meaningful progress on the reform of the Eurozone. These demands are also echoed in a joint letter by the leaders of the S&D, ALDE, and Greens Groups in the European Parliament to Council president Donald Tusk, Eurogroup president Mário Centeno and Austrian Finance Minister Hartwig Löger.
 

The European financial system must throw its weight behind the fight against climate change, say S&Ds

The Socialists and Democrats led today a vote in the economic and monetary affairs committee to facilitate private investment in low-carbon technologies, such as renewable energies, across the EU and thereby meeting the Paris Agreement objectives. The new harmonised rules on benchmarks will help enhance transparency in sustainable financing by establishing clear criteria on sustainability and by fighting ‘greenwashing’.

InvestEU Programme must be a guarantee for job creation, growth and innovation, say S&Ds

The Socialists and Democrats led today a vote in the economic and monetary affairs committee to establish the InvestEU Programme - a single structure bringing together a multitude of EU financing programmes. InvestEU will boost the creation of jobs and support investment and innovation in the EU by making EU funds more efficient, flexible and simpler. It aims to mobilise €650 billion in additional investment for the period 2021-2027.

National governments must not block attempts to protect whistleblowers in Europe

S&D MEPs have urged national ministers to swiftly adopt proposals to protect whistleblowers in the EU. The European Parliament last month backed a series of measures that will ensure those who expose unethical or illegal behaviour do not face repercussions.
