S&Ds welcome approval of the UN refugee compact and urge support for the migration pact

S&D MEPs welcomed the approval by the UN General Assembly of the Global Compact on Refugees last night. The legally non-binding text sets out a series of principles and recommendations to improve cooperation and management of refugees around the world. The compact was approved by an overwhelming majority of states, 181, with only the USA and Hungary voting against.

S&Ds secure strong 37.5% CO2 emissions target for new cars in 2030

Over 25 hours of tough negotiations between the European Parliament and the EU Council were needed to reach a provisional agreement on CO2 reductions for cars and vans.
 
The strong position held throughout by the rapporteur, S&D MEP Miriam Dalli, has ensured a 37.5% target for cars and vans in 2030, departing from a Commission proposal of 30%.
 

Progress on technical rules, but more concrete climate action is needed, say S&D’s after COP24 draws to a close

Following lengthy negotiations that continued on into the evening, the COP24 concluded with an agreement that, despite its shortcomings, provides a way forward for the implementation of the Paris Agreement through a set of uniform accounting rules called the Paris Rulebook. Moreover, COP24 gave a clear signal that all countries need to step up the debate on ambition as the 2020 deadline is rapidly approaching. By then, the world will need to come together and increase the level of ambition of the current pledges if we are to stay within the well below 2ºC objective.
