Negotiators from the European Parliament, Commission and Council agreed last night to new rules designed to make online platforms fairer and more transparent.
S&D Group negotiator on platform-to-business relationships, Christel Schaldemose MEP, said:
Thanks to the vote today in plenary endorsing the report on better animal welfare for transport within and outside the EU, the Social Democrats in the European Parliament reiterated the need for better animal welfare when animals are transported within the EU, and over its external borders. The S&D members in the agriculture committee had already made it clear that the implementation of the current Regulation needs to improve, not only within the EU, but also in long-distance transport to third countries.
The new Common Agricultural Policy beyond 2020 is being discussed in the European Parliament and the Socialists and Democrats Group want to use this opportunity to build a sustainable future for farmers, rural territories and consumers alike. This is an opportunity to support those who are really working for the well-being of all, instead of benefitting profit-oriented large businesses.
The European Parliament today backed a resolution calling for the fundamental rights of intersex people to be better protected in Europe. Intersex people are people born with sex organs and/or other sex characteristics that cannot be classified entirely as male or female. The Parliament also adopted a separate resolution calling for the next Commission to come forward with a comprehensive and ambitious strategy on LGBTI topics for its next mandate covering the period 2019-20
Leading S&D MEPs have strongly condemned the comments made by European Parliament president Antonio Tajani at a commemorative event in Basovizza. Tajani said: “Long live Trieste, long live Italian Istria, long live Italian Dalmatia, long live Italian exiles.” The comments echo old territorial claims and a nationalist discourse, and S&D MEPs have urged president Tajani to apologise for the statements in person.
