Von der Leyen must act quickly on commitment to fix EU asylum system and save lives in the Mediterranean

During a debate in the European Parliament on the ongoing situation in the Mediterranean Sea, where humanitarian NGOs are being criminalised for saving lives, S&D MEPs called on the new European Commission president to act quickly on her commitments to increase EU search and rescue operations, and fix the EU asylum.

After an intense group meeting, the majority of the S&D MEPs agreed that the written commitments made by the candidate to deliver the progressive reforms demanded by the Group, as well as the further clarifications in the plenary debate this morning, meant they would back her on the condition that she delivers on these promises.
