Major conservation win at CITES as a record 18 endangered species of shark and ray are afforded vital protection

(Geneva, Switzerland – 25 August 2019) – A total of 18 species of shark and ray, at risk due to the scale of international trade in their fins and meat, have today been awarded key Appendix II protections by the 18th Conference of the Parties (CoP18) of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

Big win for giraffes as iconic species is afforded protection from trade for first time to halt its ‘silent extinction’

(Geneva, Switzerland – 22 August 2019) – There was a big win for giraffes today at the 18th Conference of the Parties (CoP) of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES)  in Geneva, as governments voted in favour of listing the species for the first time to protect it from unregulated trade.

Governments urged to act on domestic ivory markets

(Geneva, Switzerland – 21 August 2019) – Governments attending the 18th Conference of the Parties (CoP18) of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) faced criticism today over failing to close their legal domestic ivory markets – while the forum as a whole agreed to ask such countries to report at the next meeting on what action they are taking.

Global economic confidence dips in Q2 2019, finds latest economic research from ACCA and IMA

Global economic confidence dipped back in Q2 2019, partially reversing the bounce seen for the first time in a year in Q1 2019, finds the latest Global Economic Conditions Survey (GECS) from ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) and IMA® (Institute of Management Accountants).
 
The global poll of 1,162 accountants shows that confidence remains above the record low reached at the end of 2018, consistent with a modest global economic slowdown.

Slowing down ships brings benefits to the climate, whales and the marine ecosystem

20 August 2019 – The findings of a recently published study found that a moderate reduction in the speed of all merchant ships could have a sizable impact in reducing the risk of ships striking whales and underwater noise while also reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

S&Ds: The unjustified and undemocratic decision by Turkish authorities to remove Diyarbakir, Mardin and Van mayors should be reversed

This morning the Turkish interior ministry replaced the HDP mayors of the cities of Diyarbakir, Mardin and Van. State governors have been appointed in their place. Another 418 people, mainly municipal council members and employees, have been also detained.
