Speaking immediately after the hearing of Commissioner-designate Mairead McGuinness for the Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets Union portfolio in the European Parliament in Brussels this morning, Jonás Fernández, S&D spokesperson on economic and monetary affairs, stated:

  • From 503 applicants, FIEC was appointed as a Member of the Platform on Sustainable Finance and will be among the 50 experts to advise the European Commission on the development of the technical screening criteria for the EU Taxonomy. This membership is a unique opportunity for FIEC to ensure the industry’s contribution to a sustainable Europe by making construction activities more sustainable.

    S&Ds: With binding standards on ethics, we can make AI safer and more trustworthy in Europe

    S&D MEPs are calling for binding standards in Europe on ethical principles for artificial intelligence (AI) to ensure these new technologies are safer, more trustworthy and respect fundamental rights.

    Today, MEPs voted on the report on a framework of ethical aspects of artificial intelligence in the legal affairs committee.

    S&Ds: mandatory EU rules for due diligence needed to halt global deforestation

    In 2019, the world saw a loss of 11.9 million hectares of tree cover, including 3.8 million hectares (the size of Belgium) of primary tropical forest. That is an increase of almost 3% compared to the previous year. In the Brazilian Amazon area alone, last summer deforestation rose by 88% compared to the year before. Currently forests and other valuable eco-systems and their inhabitants are not only threatened by temporary fires but face complete destruction.
