Atomwaffenverbotsvertrag: Deutschland muss beitreten!

Anlässlich des Inkrafttretens des Atomwaffenverbotsvertrags erklärt Özlem Alev Demirel, stellvertretende Vorsitzende im Ausschuss für Sicherheit und Verteidigung des Europäischen Parlaments (SEDE):

"Demands for border closures must stop"

Brussels/Frankfurt, 21 January 2021 – VDMA Executive Director Thilo Brodtmann comments on the discussion in the European Council on the Europe-wide coordination of pandemic measures:

Turkey must comply with European Court of Human Rights ruling and immediately release Selahattin Demirtaş

On the initiative of the Socialists and Democrats, the European Parliament is set to adopt today a resolution calling on Turkey to immediately release Selahattin Demirtaş, the former co-chair of the People’s Democratic Party (HDP) of Turkey, who has been in arbitrary detention since November 2016.

S&Ds: Gender equality in Europe must not be put on hold during this pandemic!

The Socialists and Democrats sounded the alarm today. Ten months on from the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, we have more and more evidence showing that lockdowns have led to a spike in violence against women, a widening of the digital gender gap and the gender divide in unpaid care work, and potentially long-term impacts on women’s work and incomes.

Everyone deserves a place to call home, say S&Ds as they push for decent, affordable housing for all

Today, the European Parliament is set to adopt a report proposing concrete policies to address the housing crisis. The Socialists and Democrats Group led the drive to consider access to decent and affordable housing as a human right that must be guaranteed for all Europeans.

Estrella Durá Ferrandis, S&D MEP responsible for social housing said:

Vote on right to disconnect is test case for conservatives’ willingness to bring workers’ rights into the digital age

Today, the European Parliament will vote on the S&D ‘Right to Disconnect’ report that calls for a binding EU law to grant this right to all European workers.

Speaking ahead of the vote on his report, S&D MEP Alex Agius Saliba, said:

Post-Brexit we must not allow a ‘Singapore-on-Thames’ at our border, say S&Ds, pushing for tougher criteria for EU’s tax haven list

Under the leadership of the Socialists and Democrats, the European Parliament is set to adopt a proposal for greater transparency and stricter criteria for the EU’s tax havens list, to be adopted by the end of 2021 – the first ever resolution of the newly established tax matters sub-committee.

Pedro Marques, MEP and S&D tax matters co-ordinator, said:

Accountancy and finance profession viewed as being ‘broadly inclusive’, but more needs to be done, finds global research

Sixty-one per cent of respondents to a global survey amongst accountancy and finance professionals say that they work in an environment free from harassment and discrimination, ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) reveals in a new report

After four year of hostilities from Trump, time to move transatlantic alliance forward!

Ahead of the inauguration of Joe Biden as new US President later today, the Socialists and Democrats express their belief in the strength of American democracy, and the capacity of the new American leadership to overcome the unprecedented polarisation of US politics.

The S&D Group is ready to start work on a new strong transatlantic alliance between progressive forces, and to build a new multilateral global order.

S&D Group stands firm on Parliament’s unambiguous call for ban on killer robots

The Socialist and Democrats are standing firm on the European Parliament’s position on calling for an unambiguous international ban on the use of lethal weapons or ‘killer robots’ without human oversight. S&D MEPs are today voting against the far right ID Group-led report on the application of artificial intelligence in civil and military as it fails to respect the European Parliament’s clear opposition from 2018 and crosses a clear red line on the issue of human control in military use.
