With more than 10 million Europeans employed in the sector, transport is an essential part of the European Union’s economy and strategic importance. The Socialists and Democrats have set out a series of proposals to ensure that the European Union will be able to respect its target of reaching carbon neutrality by 2050.

Solidarity is the Key. The idea itself of the European Union is based on solidarity, and solidarity is the compass that will reinforce the EU Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM). Whether it is a natural disaster or a pandemic, the EU must be able to be prepared and respond effectively and timely, especially when it comes to cross-border risks. The UCPM was already instrumental in the Union’s response to the pandemic, providing repatriation of EU citizens and helping the distribution of medical supplies such as ventilators and personal protective equipment.

With one in five children at risk of poverty in the EU, S&D Euro MPs will, in a debate this evening in the European Parliament, call on EU leaders to make a commitment at next week’s summit in Porto to end child poverty.  The Socialists and Democrats demand a dedicated €20 billion to ensure decent housing and adequate nutrition, as well as free, quality education, childcare and healthcare for all children.
