New EU ethics body will deliver on our commitment to strengthen democracy

Despite efforts by a right-wing coalition in the European Parliament to derail the process, MEPs are voting on the creation of a new independent ethics body.

The S&D Group wants the new body to propose and give advice on ethics rules around conflicts of interests and lobbying for Commissioners and MEPs before and throughout their term of office.

S&D’s denounce partisan vote on Cuba and call to continue constructive engagement with the island

The Socialists and Democrats will abstain in a vote on a partisan resolution on Cuba in the European Parliament today, that was pushed onto the agenda by a coalition of conservative, liberal and right-wing forces. For the third time in this legislature, EPP, Renew and ECR have pushed Cuba onto the Parliament’s agenda to denounce and undermine the Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement (PDCA) between the EU and Cuba, which had won the overwhelming support of the European Parliament in 2017, when 85% of its members voted in favour.

HERA must address outstanding weaknesses in EU pharma framework to be successful

Brussels, 16 September 2021

Medicines For Europe strongly supports the EU’s drive to learn from COVID-19 and to improve its crisis preparedness and response. The proposal to establish a European Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA) is an important contribution to that policy and we support its creation and will contribute to its work for the security of all Europeans.

S&Ds: Commission’s Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA) proposal is insufficient to face future health threats

The S&D Group wants to see more ambition on co-ordination to identify, develop, manufacture and procure critical medical counter-measures to face health threats and health emergencies. Today’s proposal provides to an extent a better governance framework for existing mechanisms, but it is not enough to face future health threats. The S&D Group is also concerned that the European Parliament will not have a seat at the negotiation table to discuss such an important regulation.

The respect for human rights must be at the centre of EU-China relations

Today, the S&Ds backed a European Parliament resolution on the EU-China strategy but insisted that the China must first make progress to protect human rights. For the S&Ds the consideration and ratification process for the EU-China Comprehensive Agreement on Investment (CAI) cannot start until the Chinese sanctions against MEPs and EU institutions have been lifted.

S&Ds: Animal research is still vital for human health but we must accelerate its phase-out

Phasing out the use of animals in research is already underway, but progress is slow. This is the key message of today’s resolution on ´plans and actions to accelerate the transition to innovation without the use of animals in research, regulatory testing and education´.

No one wants to see animals used in labs, even for scientific purposes, but we know that in the past animal-based research has contributed significantly to advances in the treatment of many human health conditions.

S&Ds: It is time to end gender-based violence in the EU once and for all

The S&D Group welcomed the news that the Commission will propose a law to fight gender violence before the end of the year. Ahead of an important vote tomorrow, S&D MEPs are urging all political groups to support effective EU action to end gender based violence once and for all.
