S&Ds: The EU must honour its pledge to donate vaccines and boost production in Africa and in developing countries

No one is safe until everyone is safe. This was supposed to be the lesson we drew from the Covid-19 pandemic, especially towards developing countries and low income countries, which have been unable to afford and access vaccines. Reality, unfortunately, looks different.

So far, less than 4% of African citizens have been vaccinated. The World Health Organisation’s target of 10% by October, only managed by 15 countries in Africa, was reached as of 1 October.

Lukashenka’s continued repression must be met with stronger EU sanctions

In the plenary today, the Socialists and Democrats called on the EU member states to implement much stronger sanctions against Belarus President Lukashenka’s regime, to close the existing loopholes and further cut the financial resources of the regime.

One year after the stolen elections in Belarus, the unabated systematic repression and impunity in the country persist. The main opposition figures are in prison or in exile and there are more than 700 political prisoners, including many independent journalists.

S&Ds to member states on 2022 EU budget: “Don't cut money for recovery behind the back of Europeans!”

The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament strongly oppose the plans of the member states in the Council who want to make considerable cuts from the EU budget for next year. They voted today for texts in the 2022 budget in the EP’s committee on budgets asking for adequate funding that corresponds to the recovery goals declared by the national government of the member states in the Council of the EU, the European Commission and the European Parliament.

There are no ‘safe levels’ of asbestos - S&Ds push Commission for an ambitious first step towards Vision Zero

Today, the European Parliament’s employment committee is voting to reduce the exposure of workers to asbestos, a number one substance known to cause cancer. The Commission is expected to present a legal proposal in 2022. The Socialists and Democrats call on the Commission to update, as a matter of priority, asbestos exposure limits by setting them at 0,001 fibres/cm3 (1 000 fibres/m3), strengthen a number of protective measures, notably safe removal, and work towards a global ban on asbestos.

Georgian politicians should put their nation’s interests above party interests

Georgia's elections on 2 October were not only local elections but also another test of democracy. As a signal of unwavering support for Georgian democracy, the European Parliament participated with a seven-member strong delegation in the OSCE/ODIHR election observation mission, including S&D MEP Marina Kaljurand.
