S&Ds want affordable energy from renewables for all to alleviate energy poverty

The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament welcome the fact that in 2020, 38% of the EU’s electricity came from renewable sources, thus overtaking the fossil fuels for the first time as the EU’s primary power source. Yet, the S&D Group is convinced this positive trend should come hand in hand with efforts on both European and national levels for making renewable energy affordable to citizens.

Access to off-patent medicines is essential to increase competition, offer accessible and affordable treatments and for the budgetary sustainability of healthcare systems in Europe, as highlighted by a European Parliament report1 adopted this week.

Podcast of the Year - Competition named after editor Janusz Majka has been resolved!

The jury awarded 11 prizes and distinctions in 7 categories. 280 podcasts were submitted to the competition and evaluated by a 14-person jury. This year's prize pool was PLN 85,000.

The Podcast of the Year is the first nationwide competition aimed at promoting the quality, originality and culture of conveying various sound forms in digital media. The competition commemorates the editor Janusz Majka, associated for almost 40 years with the Polish Radio in Rzeszów, who died in February 2021 of COVID-19.

Invest Europe welcomes the new CMU package, including proposals reviewing the AIFMD and ELTIF

The European Commission published today a series of proposals designed to implement the Capital Markets Union (CMU) Action Plan. Among these are the fund management reviews of the Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive (AIFMD) and the European Long-Term Investment Fund (ELTIF) Regulation, as well as of the European Single Access Point (ESAP) Omnibus.

Under S&D leadership, European Parliament calls for strengthening WTO as bedrock of multilateral, rules-based trading system

Ahead of the 12th World Trade Organisation’s (WTO) ministerial conference (MC12) taking place from 30 November to 3 December 2021 in Geneva, the European Parliament adopted its position today. With this resolution the European Parliament strongly supports the multilateral trading system and puts forward four concrete areas where they want to see outcomes at MC12: a multilateral agreement on prohibiting unsustainable fisheries subsidies, a pandemic response, a limited package on agriculture, as well as a commitment to institutional reform.

Better protect mobile workers with European Social Security Pass, S&Ds call on European Commission

Today, the European Parliament is set to adopt a resolution calling for the rapid realisation of a European Social Security Pass, which was first announced in the European Social Pillar Action Plan. The Socialists and Democrats want the European Social Security Pass to allow the real-time verification of a worker’s place of work, place of employment, employment relationship, identity and social security benefits. It must cover all mobile citizens and workers, as well as the self-employed and third country nationals.

The inclusion of gas and nuclear brings major challenges for the credibility and adoption of the EU Taxonomy

BRUSSELS, 24TH NOVEMBER 2021

The debate on the inclusion of natural gas and nuclear energy in the EU Taxonomy has intensified. It is not clear what the advantages of including these are. However, the risks of including these energy sources for the credibility of the EU sustainable finance agenda are significant. It will weaken the perception of the EU’s ambitions vis-à-vis international partners.
