Sakharov Prize 2021 - We honour all defenders of human rights in Russia whose voices the Kremlin tries to silence

On the occasion of the Sakharov Prize 2021 ceremony in Strasbourg today, the Socialists and Democrats pay tribute to all defenders of human rights in Russia. Like Andrei Sakharov, the eminent nuclear physicist and Soviet dissident, they courageously fight for democracy, truth and political freedom, despite efforts by the Kremlin to silence them.

S&Ds made sure consumers will be able to cross-chat from one platform to another with the Digital Markets Act

The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, led by S&D MEP Evelyne Gebhardt, achieved interoperability of messaging services and social media when it comes to big online platforms, with the adoption of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) by the plenary of the European Parliament. If the Parliament’s position is backed, consumers will be able to send messages from one application to another. The DMA regulates the so-called ‘gatekeepers’ which provide core platform services.

S&Ds: Polluters and environmental offenders must face a punishment that fits the crime

S&D MEPs welcome the Commission’s proposal to upgrade the out-dated Environmental Crimes Directive, as outlined in a Parliamentary report on environmental liability in May 2021. However, the S&D Group believes the EU should go further in protecting the environment through criminal law than the Commission’s proposals today by recognising ecocide as a crime under EU law. Harsher sanctions on lawbreakers and stronger enforcement are important steps in deterring environmental crimes and protecting the planet.

S&Ds: Free movement is not a political football

S&D MEPs voiced serious concerns on the Commission’s revised rules on the Schengen area. The Schengen area, representing free movement and the end of internal borders in the EU, has suffered significantly as a result of national kneejerk responses to irregular migration, perceived terrorist threat, and - more recently - the pandemic.

S&Ds welcome legislative proposals to ensure energy security throughout the EU

The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament welcome the measures by the European Commission to decarbonise buildings, support measures in favour of renewables and low carbon gases and to reduce methane emissions. This comes after earlier today, the Commission adopted a set of legislative proposals to decarbonise the EU gas market and to ensure energy security throughout the European Union.

Mohammed Chahim MEP, S&D vice-president responsible for the energy aspects of the Green Deal, said:

ChargeUp Europe warmly welcomes increased ambitions in overhaul of Energy Performance of Buildings Directive

We are happy to see that the proposal recognizes the critical role that buildings have in accelerating the decarbonization of transport. Currently, over 75% of all EV charging sessions currently take place at home or at the workplace, but there are significant regulatory and administrative barriers to installing infrastructure in many settings.

S&Ds: EU must prepare severe sanctions to prevent Russia from using force against Ukraine

While urging for immediate military de-escalation and a return to diplomacy, the Socialists and Democrats called to prepare severe sanctions against Russia, that should already be agreed at the European Summit this Thursday, in efforts to prevent the Kremlin from using force against Ukraine.  At the same time, they insisted that political dialogue remains the sole basis for solving the conflict in eastern Ukraine and that this dialogue must and will always involve Ukraine.

Pressemitteilung Europaabgeordneter Martin Schirdewan (DIE LINKE.): Digital Markets Act: Monopole in die Schranken weisen

Martin Schirdewan, Ko-Vorsitzender der Linksfraktion THE LEFT im Europäischen Parlament, erklärt zur heutigen Abstimmung über den „Digital Markets Act“ (DMA) im Straßburger Plenum:

Democracy at work: guaranteeing workers have a say in just transitions

The plenary of the European Parliament will today debate an S&D report on democracy at work, with a vote tomorrow.

S&Ds carry through new EU legislation on digital services replacing the current 20-year-old rules

The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament’s committee on internal market and consumer protection (IMCO), led by S&D MEP Christel Schaldemose, voted in favour of the new legislation that will regulate the services provided to Europeans on digital platforms. The S&D Group is unanimous on the need to update the rules, more than twenty years after the adoption of the current European legislation in the year 2000.
