EU data confirms key contribution of biomethane to clean mobility

The statistical office of the European Union (Eurostat) announced this week that the EU has met the target of 10% deployment of renewable energy in transport by 2020. The target was set to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the transport sector by promoting the use of renewable energy. The share of green energy in the EU mobility sector includes biomethane, liquid biofuels and renewable electricity.

25,10% bioCNG in 2020: New data proves rapid growth of biomethane in transport

Brussels, 3 February 2022 – Today, the Natural & bio Gas Vehicle Association (NGVA Europe) has released new data, proving rapid growth of biomethane as transport fuel in Europe.

With more than a quarter of the gas used in road transport being renewable, an overwhelming amount of Europe’s 3810 CNG stations already successfully delivered biomethane to European consumers in December 2020.

SGI Europe welcomes the proposed inclusion of nuclear and natural gas in the EU taxonomy framework

Today (2 February), the European Commission adopted its complementary delegated act (CDA) on nuclear and natural gas in the EU taxonomy. Article 16 of the Italian Law Decree 04/2022 (“DL Sostegni ter”) introduces discriminatory measures between producers of electricity based on generation technology, creates market distortions undermining investor confidence and risks slowing down the energy transition process. Leading Associations representing the electricity sector in Italy and Europe are united in calling on the Italian Government to withdraw Art.16 and to initiate a constructive dialogue to define effective and balanced solutions to tackle high energy prices.

S&Ds: Reducing energy dependency and volatility of prices is paramount before the end of the winter

The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament want effective measures at an EU level to significantly reduce high energy prices. S&D MEPs exchanged views on the topic with the European Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, who came to the committee on industry, research and energy (ITRE) for this purpose and also to present the new EU framework to decarbonise gas markets, promote hydrogen and reduce methane emissions, as well as the revision of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive.
