The current crisis highlights the need to improve Europe’s energy security.  Which means more renewables ASAP.  The EU and national governments clearly get this.  Germany’s Finance Minister Christian Lindner recently called renewables “freedom energies”.

Next week’s EU Commission paper on energy prices is a great chance to plot the course that will deliver the rapid expansion of renewables and energy security.

EU sunflower oil supply outlook critical as a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine

Brussels, 4 March 2022 – The war situation in Ukraine will, according to FEDIOL members, have important consequences on European supplies of sunflower seed oil, as the approximately 200.000 tonnes per month supply has stopped being shipped to European ports and member companies assess the short and longer- term consequences of the devastating invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

Today a delegation of Socialists and Democrats led by its president, Iratxe García, travelled to the Hungarian region of Lónya, bordering Ukraine. S&D MEPs met with NGOs, including the Red Cross, to express their support and urgently demand more EU action.

According to UN figures, more than one million people have already left Ukraine, and the influx will only increase in the coming days. The S&D Group urges the Council to agree to trigger the Temporary Protection Directive.

S&Ds in Hungary to promote democracy and social justice for all

As part of the Conference on the Future of Europe, socialists and democrats will gather in Budapest on Friday 4 March to promote a progressive path for Hungary based on democracy, social justice and solidarity in the EU. On Friday, the S&D Group president will also meet with representatives from the independent media forced off the air, Klubrádió, as well as civil society groups and former members of Hungary’s judicial authorities.

On Monday 7 March at 19.00 CET – on the eve of International Women’s Day – S&D President Iratxe Garcia Perez, Mayor of Ovanåker (Sweden) Yoomi Renström, and LBT* campaigner Dragana Todorovic will join Rainbow Rose President Camila Garfias and PES Women President Zita Gurmai for a Twitter Spaces to launch Reclaim your space – a feminist outcry for equality.

Statement on the war in Ukraine from the European Society of Endocrinology

It is with great sadness that we at the European Society of Endocrinology (ESE) are watching the development of the war in Ukraine. We stand in solidarity with those members of our communities, healthcare professionals, researchers, and patients as well as all people from Ukraine impacted by the invasion of the Russian army. ESE promotes endocrine health, research, science, and education among professionals and patients across Europe and beyond.
