No grounds for resuming accession negotiations with Ankara!

Today the European Parliament adopted its progress report on Turkey. Drafted by S&D MEP Nacho Sánchez Amor, the report points out that despite some improvements during the last period in high-level contacts between the EU and Turkey, tensions are now back on the rise.  Ankara clearly has no political will to stop the continuous backsliding on democracy and human rights, as shown by the recent life sentence given to activist Osman Kavala.

Fit for 55: Revision of the CO2 emissions performance standards for new cars and vans

Yesterday, the European Parliament voted on the Commission's proposal to set an objective of zero tailpipe emissions for new cars and vans by 2035. This means a de facto ban on the sales of new internal combustion engine (ICE) cars and vans from that date onwards. The FIA European Bureau supports the EU climate objectives whilst keeping an eye on the consequences on mobility and the individual citizens.

S&Ds congratulate Danish people on saying “Yes” to joining Common Security and Defence Policy!

The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament congratulate the Danish people for voting in yesterday's referendum to overturn their 30-year-old opt-out from the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP). Following on from the Swedish and Finnish applications for NATO membership, the Danish vote is yet another historic response to Russian aggression against Ukraine and the new security situation in Europe.

‘No recovery money until all conditions are met’, Iratxe García reminds von der Leyen ahead of her trip to Poland

Ahead of the visit by the Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to Warsaw tomorrow, Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament recall that the three conditions to benefit from the Recovery and Resilience Facility, the so-called milestones - dismantling a controversial disciplinary chamber for judges; reforming the disciplinary regime; and reinstating dismissed judges - have not yet been met by the Polish government.
