S&Ds: ‘Silent pandemic’ of antibiotic-resistant germs requires more action and less talk

At a vote in the European Parliament today, a mainly conservative majority accepted the Commission’s unambitious list of antimicrobials reserved just for human use. This is a loss for human and animal health, in favour of business interests. Already now, more than 1.3 million people die every year from infections that can no longer be successfully treated due to antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

S&Ds: The EU summit must breathe new energy into the enlargement process!

Ahead of the EU summit on Thursday and Friday, the Socialists and Democrats will today in the plenary call on the 27 EU heads of states and governments to grant EU candidate status to Ukraine, as a political signal of solidarity with the brave people of Ukraine defending their country.

S&Ds on Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive agreement: business talks a big game, but now we’ll know who walks the walk

The Socialists and Democrats welcome the agreement between the Parliament and EU governments to ensure companies are more transparent about their environmental and social impact. The agreement reached Tuesday night on the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) will introduce a single set of mandatory reporting standards for all large EU and non-EU companies, as well as listed small and medium-sized enterprises.

S&Ds remained true to our values: We improved today’s climate deal, it has a red heart

We finally have a deal on three key pillars of the Fit for 55 package, and it is fairer and better thanks to S&D Group’s relentless efforts. We had to vote it down at the last plenary in Strasbourg so we could improve it. We did it! We also made it clear that we will not let the conservatives play dirty tricks by watering down our ambitions while collaborating with the far-right. Today’s deal has a red heart!

S&Ds welcome Commission’s yielding to their demands for stronger and more enforceable TSD chapters as an important step towards a fairer and more sustainable EU trade policy

The Socialists and Democrats have been spearheading calls for including ambitious sustainable development chapters in all trade agreements for many years. Today’s Commission proposal incorporates many core S&D demands, and MEPs welcome it as it sets EU trade policy on a new, progressive path.

Inmaculada Rodríguez-Piñero, S&D spokesperson on trade, said:

S&Ds: Running out of time to achieve 2030 Agenda. We must incorporate the Sustainable Development Goals in every EU policy!

There are less than eight years to go until 2030, the target date to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda. However, the already difficult path towards their achievement has been hindered even more due to the devastating consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic and the war against Ukraine. Now, even the small progresses that have been made are being reversed.

EU joint gas purchases means cheaper gas, and we made it possible, say S&Ds

The Socialists and Democrats welcome the new Gas Storage Regulation. They believe their ideas taken on board in this legislation will make sure energy supply for EU citizens and businesses is not interrupted during next winter’s season. The joint purchases of gas from third countries is a great achievement for the S&D Group. This means that from now, it will be possible at an EU level to negotiate together the prices of gas supplies from other parts of the world.

S&Ds: Parliament votes to extend EU COVID Certificates as a precaution

Following negotiations with EU governments, the European Parliament has voted to extend the validity of the EU Digital COVID Certificate. The certificates were originally agreed between the Parliament and the Council as a tool to make travel easier, and in particular to ease travel restrictions for people that have been vaccinated, tested negative or have recently recovered from COVID. The current framework is due to expire on 1 July.
