Challenges lie ahead for internal control within organisations

The purpose and effectiveness of internal control are being tested like never before by myriad external pressures, reveals a new report from ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants), the Internal Audit Foundation, and IMA® (Institute of Management Accountants).

S&Ds: The EU Commission must take immediate and concrete actions to ensure aviation workers’ and passengers’ rights

The current situation with air transport and the cancellation of several flights and disruptions in our airports across Europe is unacceptable and requires an immediate and firm action from the EU Commission. Massive support was granted to the sector during the pandemic, now we expect the same concrete help will be ensured to improve workers’ labour conditions and respect travellers’ rights.

S&Ds: Taxing energy companies’ astronomic profits is a matter of basic social justice

In times of high economic uncertainty when many families are struggling to pay for food and energy, taxing energy companies’ exceptionally high profits is a matter of basic social justice. The EU should properly tax these astronomic profits estimated at €200 billion in 2022, urge the S&Ds.

Iratxe García on Johnson’s resignation: “The UK deserves better than this Tory government”

Reacting to the resignation of UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, S&D president Iratxe García said:

“Boris Johnson's time in office has strained EU-UK relations to an all-time low. His long overdue resignation must mark a turning point. The UK deserves better than this Tory government.

S&Ds: With ReFuelEU, the aviation sector will become by 2050 one of the most green ways of transport for EU citizens

The European Parliament has taken a strong first step, voting in favour of the sustainable aviation fuels report, which aims to make the aviation sector more sustainable in order to reach our climate goals. The proposal includes obligations for fuel suppliers to gradually increase the share of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) for all commercial flights in Europe.

S&Ds: The right to legal and safe abortion should be included in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights!

With the massive support of Socialists and Democrats, today the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling on the EU member states to include the right to legal and save abortion in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. This is the S&D’s answer to the growing attacks on women globally, with the US Supreme Court decision on 24 June to overrule the constitutional right to abortion being the latest and most shocking example.

S&Ds: By labelling gas and nuclear as sustainable in taxonomy, the conservatives have shamefully betrayed EU climate ambitions

Overturning the vote at Committee level, the plenary of the European Parliament has endorsed the EU Commission Taxonomy Complementary Delegated Act. Due to votes from conservatives, a slight majority of MEPs supported the controversial Commission proposal labelling gas and nuclear energy as sustainable and thus compliant with the taxonomy classification that serves as a key guide for investors.

S&Ds: National vetoes must not be used as bargaining chips, the EU must overcome paralysing unanimity voting to deliver tax justice!

The Hungarian government led by Viktor Orbán must immediately withdraw its veto on transposing the global deal on a minimum effective tax rate for multinationals into European legislation. National vetoes must not be abused and used for political bargaining. Another way forward – such as a transition to qualified majority voting in tax matters – must be found in order to overcome the paralysing impact of unanimity voting, which is stopping us delivering on our promises for tax justice.

S&Ds to support the EP reports on Kosovo, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina

Today the Socialists and Democrats will support the European Parliament’s annual progress reports on three Western Balkan countries: Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. Each of these countries is in a different place on the European path and each must be evaluated on its own merits and on strict criteria. But the future of the whole Western Balkan region lies in the European Union, insist the S&Ds.

S&Ds: No time to waste. The EU must play a crucial role to prevent Global South population from starvation

The time for talk is over. The Zero Hunger ambition of the second Sustainable Development Goal is still far from being reached. Hunger and food insecurity are increasing across the world, also due to the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russian war against Ukraine, and around 660 million people may still face hunger in 2030.
