The people of Ukraine are S&Ds’ candidate for the 2022 Sakharov Prize

In times of the most brutal attack on peace in Europe since World War II, the people of Ukraine are a natural choice for the 2022 Sakharov Prize for freedom of thought*. The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament decided to nominate them with a clear message: Ukrainians are fighting for our democracy and freedom and thus deserve our wholehearted support.

Forced adoption of Ukrainian children to Russia is a crime against humanity. It must be stopped!

Since Russia launched its war of aggression against Ukraine, at least 1 million Ukrainians* have been deported to the Russian Federation and the occupied territories of Ukraine. Among them, thousands of innocent Ukrainian children have been abducted by Russian forces to be adopted to Russian families. This is a clear violation of human rights and international law, including the Geneva Convention and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The Socialists and Democrats today called on the European Commission and the Member States to come up with bold decisions, such as a price ceiling on energy imports. This took place during a plenary debate in the European Parliament on the eve of legislative proposals expected from the European Commission to tackle the  energy price crisis. The S&Ds also called for a fair redistribution of energy companies’ huge profits to support citizens as well as small and medium businesses.
