Ahead of the extraordinary Justice and Home Affairs Council on Friday, the Socialists and Democrats call for an Action Plan for Search and Rescue operations for persons arriving by sea and a new Pact on Migration and Asylum that includes an effective relocation mechanism.

During a debate in the European Parliament, the leader of the S&D Group, Iratxe García, urged EU governments to show solidarity and to stick to their international obligations to rescue people at risk at sea.

The S&Ds will today support the resolution recognising Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism and as a state which uses means of terrorism.

Pedro Marques, the S&D vice-president, said:

“Since Russia launched its fully-fledged war against Ukraine, we have condemned it in the strongest terms, advocated for strong EU sanctions to be imposed on Russia and called to fight impunity by prosecuting Russia for its war crimes, crimes against humanity and the crime of aggression.

Over 100 participants and 20 speakers gathered in Brussels on 16 November 2022 to discuss the latest developments to boost biomethane trading across Europe. Cross-border trading of biomethane will be essential to ensure the EU can deliver 35 bcm of biomethane by 2030.
