THE EUROPEAN CEMENT INDUSTRY IS HIGHLY VULNERABLE TO CARBON LEAKAGE

Brussels 8 December 2008 – At a press conference held today CEMBUREAU, the European Cement Association, presented its case regarding the European cement industry’s vulnerability to carbon leakage in relation to the ongoing EU Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) negotiations. In addition, representatives from The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) presented their analysis which highlights the potential impact of the 2013-2020 EU ETS proposal on the European cement industry.

Position of the doctors in Europe on the political agreement of the EPSCO Council regarding the Working Time Directive

The CPME and the other European Medical Organisations (EMOs) clearly express their opposition to the political agreement reached by the EPSCO council regarding the proposals of the Commission for a revision of the existing European Working Time Directive (EWTD).

These proposed amendments to Directive 2003/88/EC jeopardize patients’ and doctor’s safety in Europe and would penalize European health services as a whole through the reduction in the level of protection of both patients
and doctors.

Don’t make consumers pay twice for household waste collection!

Only days after announcing a stimulus package for the European economy, the
European Commission has put forward plans to make companies financially
responsible for collecting end-of-life electrical goods from consumers. This
measure will do nothing to address the main problems identified by the
Commission and will add one billion euros of extra costs for European
manufacturers at a time of significant economic downturn. This policy is
inconsistent, incoherent and unacceptable.
