Watson, the liberal candidate for the European Parliament presidency

Graham Watson, Leader of the ALDE group in the European Parliament yesterday announced his candidature for the presidency of the European Parliament.

In front of liberal colleagues from all around Europe, gathering for ALDE’s annual New Years reception in Brussels, Watson declared that he has written to all MEPs to inform them of his candidacy for the Parliament’s top job when the new legislative term starts in June, following the European elections.

ALDE Group Leader Graham Watson has launched his campaign for the presidency of the European Parliament. Speaking about his ambitions for the Parliament's future, Mr. Watson said:

"For too long, Presidents of Parliament have been chosen through backroom deals in smoke-filled rooms. Mine will be the first ever public campaign for the presidency: in this I hope that I will set a precedent.

"We need a proper debate about the role and priorities of the next President. This is what European democracy should be about.

The Czech Presidency of the EU and European Commission will officially launch the European Year of Creativity and Innovation 2009 on Wednesday 7 January with the slogan “Imagine. Create. Innovate”. The aim of the Year is to promote creative and innovative approaches in different sectors of human activity and help equip the European Union for the challenges ahead in a globalised world.
