MEPs call for immediate end to hostilities in Gaza

MEPs have co-signed a crucial resolution regarding the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict in Gaza which is due to be approved tomorrow in Strasbourg. The resolution calls on both sides to respect UN Security Council resolution 1860 that demands an immediate end to the hostilities, the withdrawal of the Israeli troops from Gaza, the sustained re opening of the crossing points, the lifting of the blockade and the prevention of smuggling of illicit trafficking in arms and ammunition.

European farming sector has mixed views of outcome of European Parliament’s vote on plant protection

The European Parliament adopted two major pieces of legislation on plant protection today: one on the authorisation and marketing of plant protection products, the other on their sustainable use. The farmers and agri-cooperatives represented by Copa-Cogeca have mixed views of the outcome of this three-year process.
Pekka Pesonen, Secretary General of Copa-Cogeca, said, “We are relieved that the EU will continue to base its legislation on sound science and has not given in to the most extreme voices.

New pesticides legislation should not jeopardise rail safety

Europe’s rail sector welcomes the more flexible approach towards the use of pesticides as approved by Members of the European Parliament in today’s plenary vote in Strasbourg. However, CER and EIM warn that national implementation of the new rules must ensure that safety on the railways is not compromised.
