CPME Board meeting 14 March 2009 outcomes

CPME Subcommittees, Board and General Assembly met on 13 and 14 March 2009 in Prague.

ManuFuture gears up to launching a Public Private Partnership in the manufacturing technology sector

ManuFuture, the European technology platform on future manufacturing technologies, last week decided to set up a new industry-led R&D association - “European Factories of the Future Research Association” (EFFRA) - that will engage into a public private partnership in the area of R&D with the European Commission. The European Technology Platform involves key stakeholders across Europe, including engineering industry associations and their member companies. At last weeks` meeting, the ManuFuture High Level Group decided to set up the new R&D association.

19 March - EPP LEADERS MEET IN BRUSSELS AHEAD OF THE EUROPEAN COUNCIL

The EPP Heads of State and Government along with the President of the European Commission, José Manuel BARROSO, and the President of the European Parliament, Hans-Gert POETTERING, will meet on 19 March 2009 in Brussels.

Brussels – 13 March 2009 - The Brewers of Europe, the European brewing association, today launched a report demonstrating the sector’s leading role in the fight against alcohol misuse at a Brussels symposium on responsible beer consumption. The report summarises the progress made in fulfilling the commitments pledged under the EU Alcohol and Health Forum.

European Paper Week: New look, new location

This year’s European Paper Week will take as its theme ‘Building on paper’s values’. It will take place in the beautifully renovated Marivaux Hotel and Conference Centre in the heart of Europe - Brussels. The conference centre incorporates an old cinema complex and these elegant historical surroundings will host the CEPI Annual Dinner as well as seminars and many other industry sector meetings. From 17-19 November more than 300 participants will discuss and debate latest key issues and challenges.

EU high-level group’s recommendations on the competitiveness of the agro-food industry must be followed by concrete action

The EU’s high-level group on the competitiveness of the agro-food industry, which meets under the chairmanship of Commission Vice-President Günter Verheugen, today agreed on a number of recommendations to increase the competitiveness of the European food chain. Copa-Cogeca
strongly support these efforts, which must now be followed by concrete action.

Pekka Pesonen, the Secretary General of Copa-Cogeca and a member of the high-level group said, “We are pleased that the issue of market power in the food chain is being taken seriously.

Agri-cooperatives well-placed to weather current financial crisis

Financial experts from leading cooperative banks met in Brussels last week to discuss agricooperatives’
access to finance and risk assessment. They concluded that agribusiness in general and agri-cooperatives in particular are well-placed to weather the current financial crisis, due to their business model being based on credibility, stability and a low-risk approach.
