Today the European Parliament’s Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) Committee voted on the Recast of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) proposal, taking the Parliament a significant step further towards adopting a first reading before the June elections.

MEPs vote in favour of improving rail freight in Europe

An important step towards improving the quality of international rail freight transport in Europe was
taken today, when MEPs voted by a very large majority in favour of proposed new rules aimed at
creating a competitive freight network.

EUREAU is the European federation of national associations of drinking water suppliers and waste water services. EUREAU’s members represent more than 10.000 drinking water & waste water utilities across Europe that provide sustainable water services to more than 400 million European citizens.

“EUREAU recognises that the EEA Report brings some very crucial questions on the light and would like to ensure the public opinion and the policy makers that the water operators are not only aware about the problems but are already very actively tackling them”, said the Federation.

The Conciliation Process of the EWTD goes into the next round: Delegations of the European Parliament, the Commission and the Council are continuing their talks on
Wednesday to amend the European Directive that represents the cornerstone of labour protection in the European Union.
We are warning the Council and the Commission not to proceed along their path of diluting basic protection of hard working personnel in the health-care industry. Doctors
and nurses deserve decent working hours, fair regulation of overtime and health protecting rules of on-call-duties.

G-20 must include mobility in the Global Green New Deal

On the eve of the G-20 London Summit, UITP calls on Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors to integrate the urban mobility dimension into their recovery plans.

“Any stimulus plan that does not integrate urban mobility will fail. Heavy investments in the car sector and on road infrastructure are converging to push us into the next crisis: the climatic one” says Hans Rat, UITP Secretary General.

ETNO urges EU Telecoms Ministers to fully exploit the potential of the telecoms sector to accelerate the economic recovery

BRUSSELS – Up to two million new jobs could be created and 900 billion ? added to EU GDP thanks to the deployment of next generation high speed broadband networks. The potential of the EU telecoms sector in helping Europe overcome the crisis must be fully exploited, said ETNO in a letter to telecoms ministers on the eve of the EU Telecoms Council to be partly devoted to the impact of the crisis on the sector.

EPP PRESIDENT WELCOMES FOUNDING OF NEW ITALIAN PARTY POPOLO DELLA LIBERTA (PDL)

The President of the EPP, Wilfried Martens, today welcomed the founding of the new Italian party Popolo della Liberta (PDL).

Speaking in its first Congress in Rome, President Martens said that PDL shares the same fundamental values of the EPP political family: freedom, justice, dignity of the person, equality and solidarity.

“Taking into accounts its statutes, PDL has a clear idea about the role that a political party should play in a modern society”, he stated.

ExxonMobil’s new Antwerp cogeneration plant to be showcased in Brussels on 21-22 April.

On 23 March ExxonMobil inaugurated its newest high efficiency cogeneration plant at its Antwerp refinery in Belgium. The project will be presented for the first time in Brussels at the opening session of the 15th COGEN Europe’s Annual Conference 2009 on 21-22 April.

European Parliament boosts support for the automobile industry in Europe
