European Paper Industry Already Tackling Illegal logging

The Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI) welcomed the strong political commitment of the European Parliament to address the issue of illegal logging in Europe shown in its vote today on the Caroline Lucas report. However the European pulp and paper industries are already active in this field and have systems in place to ensure the legality of wood used in Europe today.

ITRE Committee uses its power to reject new Energy Label layout

ANEC, the European Consumer Voice in Standardisation, welcomes yesterday’s vote1 in the European Parliament’s Industry, Research and Energy Committee (ITRE) to reject
proposals for a new Energy Label layout for televisions and refrigerating appliances.

The Committee called on the Commission to “come back with a more consumer-friendly energy label for TVs and household fridges”.

Review of EU Telecoms Rules: Improved rules on investment risk must swiftly translate into more flexible regulation for NGA

BRUSSELS – ETNO welcomes the inclusion in the revised directives of new mechanisms to improve incentives for investment in next generation access networks, following a vote on 21 April of the EP Industry Committee on the review of the telecoms package. However, ETNO regrets the inclusion of a new remedy of functional separation. ETNO congratulates the Presidency and the EP rapporteurs for having achieved an agreement on most aspects and call on
them to find a compromise on the remaining issue of amendment 46 (formerly 138), which fully respects citizens’ fundamental rights.

Brussels, 22 April 2009 - Today, the European Commission unveiled its eagerly anticipated Green Paper [1] on the Reform of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) [2] in preparation for the CFP’s next fundamental round of reform in 2013. BirdLife International welcomed it as an encouraging start for urgently needed radical changes.

Green light for the telecoms package

Tuesday evening in Strasbourg the European Parliament's industry and energy committee voted in favour on a common regulatory framework for electronic communications networks and service. The 'telecoms package' contains four reports on the reform of the regulatory framework for electronic communications - including mobile and fixed telephones, broadcasting and the internet. In particular the 'report on a directive on universal service and user's rights relating to communications networks' has raised differing opinions.

Germany received European award for leading cogeneration policy

The Federal Republic of Germany yesterday received the COGEN Europe Recognition Award 2009 in the category “Policy Development”, recognising the Member State which recently has progressed most significantly in implementing policy in support of cogeneration. The Award Ceremony took place during COGEN Europe’s Annual Conference Dinner on 21 April in Brussels and the Policy Development Award was accepted by Manfred Schüller (CDU/CSU) and Jasmin Gassen (SPD) on behalf of the German Parliament.

Jorgen Henningsen will question whether ETS will be successful in CO2 reduction

In a keynote speech at the COGEN Europe Annual Conference tomorrow Jorgen Henningsen, one of Europe’s architects of the Kyoto Protocol, will question the high level of
faith placed in the Emissions Trading Scheme by the current European Union administration in its battle to tackle climate change. Mr Henningsen in his address “Where to for cogeneration in the Kyoto Protocol“ will revisit the objectives of the protocol and question the role of ETS in achieving these.
