New IEA report says policy makers should invest in CHP to achieve climate change targets

In identifying climate change abatement solutions the IEA launched its latest report on CHP at COGEN Europe’s Annual Conference in Brussels. The report carries the message that global commercial capacity to double CHP exists and
that governments should invest in CHP as part of their overall climate change strategy. Europe should be bolder in pursuing its CHP policy.

EU fisheries policy needs to be radically decentralised

The European Parliament adopted a report today by Elspeth Attwooll (LibDem, United Kingdom) which advocates a complete recast of the institutional governance of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), in particular by reinforcing the role of the Regional Advisory Councils (RACs) established in 2004. This report comes at a time when the European Commission has announced a wide consultation in order to reform "Blue Europe" in view of 2013.

Copa-Cogeca is extremely concerned about the association agreement negotiations between Morocco and the EU

The European Commission is currently negotiating the renewal of the association agreement with Morocco. In the context of the negotiations underway, Morocco is asking in particular for the entry price system for fresh fruit and vegetables to be removed and for an increase in the
import quotas of fruit and vegetables entering Europe.
According to Pekka Pesonen, Secretary General of Copa-Cogeca, the entry price system applicable to fresh fruit and vegetables imports coming into the EU cannot be called into question.

New Copa presidency: Padraig Walshe elected President

The Praesidium of Copa, the organisation representing European farmers, today unanimously
elected Mr Padraig Walshe as the new President for the 2009 to 2011 period. He succeeds Mr
Jean-Michel Lemétayer whose two-year mandate has come to an end.

Mr Walshe has been President of the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) since 2007. From 1998 to 2002, he chaired the IFA’s National Dairy Committee. Together with his wife, he manages a family farm and mainly produces milk and beef meat.

On Thursday 23 April 2009, the European Parliament adopted in first reading the proposal for a directive on patients’ rights in cross-border healthcare. To date, the issue of a patient's right to access healthcare elsewhere in the EU has so far been decided by the Europeam Court of justice. The Commission proposal and the outcome of the first reading on this in the European Parliament today, aim to clarify the situation by putting in place a system to allow patients access to treatment in other Member States.

MEPs send strong signal to national governments on rail freight law

Voting today in its Strasbourg plenary session, the European Parliament adopted by a large majority proposed new rules aimed at creating a competitive freight network across the EU by granting increased priority to freight trains along certain trans‐European “corridors.” Making rail freight more attractive is a vital part of the strategy to meet the EU’s environmental targets and to reduce congestion on Europe’s crowded roads. The rail sector now calls upon EU governments to approve the proposal as adopted by the European Parliament.

Green transport funding becomes more accessible

Today the European Parliament took an important step to increase the attractiveness of the Marco Polo Programme. Fewer constraints, increased financial availability for ancillary infrastructure and more flexibility in carrying out projects will help in shifting freight off the road and on to more environmentally friendly transport modes.
