Online gaming and betting: French draft legislation fails EC law test

The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) welcomes the European Commission’s detailed opinion against the French proposal for online gaming and betting.

The draft legislation is supposed to regulate the online gaming and betting market in France, but is under increasing criticism for only serving to protect the French monopolies Française Des Jeux and PMU.

The International Association of Public Transport (UITP) elects a new President

Vienna, 8 June 2009: The UITP General Assembly elected yesterday Mr Alain Flausch, CEO of the STIB, the Brussels public transport company, as its new president.

This election acknowledges the long-standing engagement of Mr. Flausch on the international stage. Member of the UITP Policy Board and of the Metro Division of UITP, Mr Flausch is also the president of the Belgium Union of Regional Public Transports (UBTCUR) which gathers the three national public transport companies. Mr. Flausch succeeds to Mr Roberto Cavalieri who head the organisation for four years.

ENEL rights offering: Fulvio Conti subscribing about 250,000 new shares for a total consideration of about 715,000 euros

Rome, 3 June 2009 – Enel announces that, as part of the rights offering now under way, CEO and General Manager Fulvio Conti today subscribed 248,365 newly issued
shares for a total consideration of 715,575 euros, including the purchase of pre-emptive rights on the market.

ALDE to emerge as the kingmaker of the new EP majority

Speaking ahead of the first official European election results expected on Sunday evening, ALDE Leader Graham Watson predicted a strong showing for Liberals and Democrats across Europe:

"It will be a good night for us as I hope to see our share of the House grow. Although the Parliament will shrink in size, so in absolute numbers Groups will be smaller, our relative strength will be greater" said Graham Watson.

Appointment of Dr. Hubert Mandery as new Cefic Director General

Brussels, 4 June 2009 - The Board of Cefic today gave approval to the appointment of Dr. Hubert Mandery as Cefic Director General Designate in succession to Alain Perroy on his retirement on 31 October 2009. The appointment is subject to ratification by Cefic General Assembly in Lisbon on 3rd October 2009.

The appointment is the culmination of a wide search, assessment and interview process, organised through the Nominations Committee of Cefic, with the support of Odgers Berndtson.

CALL OF THE WATER SERVICES COMPANIES IN EUROPE AND ITALY

EUREAU and Federutility, the Federations that gather the Water Services Companies in Europe and in Italy, address their call to the candidates that will win the upcoming European Elections to be held on the 6th and 7th of June.

The Federations, reunited in Bari on the occasion of the 16th edition of the European Conference H2Obiettivo 2000, have signed a paper that will be handed to the Deputies that will be elected.

EPP supports plan opf Barroso Commission for tackling unemployment

The European People's Party (EPP) offered today its full support to the new initiative of the European Commission to immediately free-up €19bn in earmarked funds for tackling unemployment as a result of the current economic crisis in Europe.

“Unemployment is the worst consequence of the economic crisis and the main concern for European citizens. The new plan announced by the Barroso Commission is on the right track to stimulate job growth and to put Europe back on the path for economic development,” stated the President of the EPP, Wilfried Martens.
