ACEA Competitiveness Award 2009 for graduate Chiara Miglioli

Brussels, 22/06/2009 – Chiara Miglioli, graduate from the College of Europe in Bruges, has won this year’s ACEA Competitiveness Award for a thesis on the influence of impact assessment and sustainable development objectives on policy-making in the European Commission.

The European commission recently launched a call for proposals in the framework of the Eco-Innovation programme. This call concerns the 4 following areas:

1. Recycling materials -

- improving sorting processes for waste materials
- strengthening the competitiveness of the recycling industries
- New recycling solutions and innovative products that use recycled materials

2.Buildings and construction -

Trains set to power ahead as Europe plans for transport modes to bear their true environmental and social cost

Rail will play a key role in the future of transport, as Europe seeks to improve transport efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, a communication on the future of transport published by the European Commission on 17 June claims. In line with what European rail infrastructure managers have long been calling for, the Commission document argues for the internalisation of the external costs of transport, more efficient use of existing infrastructure and the opening up of the transport market.

Farmers from all EU countries come to Luxembourg to demand a recovery plan for agriculture

A large pan-European farmers’ demonstration is taking place in Luxembourg today. Several thousand protesters have come from all 27 EU countries to show Europe and the agriculture ministers meeting there how serious the crisis really is.

Drastic EC Action Needed Against Slovenian Vignettes

The FIA Eurocouncil deplores Slovenia’s latest decree fixing a new road toll vignette system for its highway system of just 487km. Werner Kraus, President of the Austrian automobile club OAMTC and chairman of the Eurocouncil, said “The amended vignette system is utterly unfair, overpriced and a cynical response to the European Commission’s request to stop discriminating against European tourists visiting or in transit through Slovenia.

The EPP formally endorsed during the election campaign President Barroso for a second term and was the only European political party to do so during the campaign.

Liberals ready for the EU negotiations

European liberal prime ministers and party leaders today gathered together for their traditional pre EU summit meeting in Brussels. They discussed the upcoming election of the President of the European Commission; the preparations for the Swedish presidency and their support for a second referendum on the Lisbon Treaty in the company of Irish Prime Minister, Brian Cowen.

Copa and Cogeca announce pan-European farmers’ demonstration in Luxembourg on 22 June

Copa and Cogeca today announce that a large demonstration of farmers from all EU countries will be held at the next meeting of the Agriculture Council on Monday, 22 June in Luxembourg.

Pekka Pesonen, Secretary General of Copa-Cogeca, said, “Food production is the single biggest economic activity in Europe and it is facing serious problems. Dairy in particular is in a very severe crisis, and other sectors, from pig meat and olive oil to sheep and goats are suffering, too.

Copa and Cogeca demand roadmap from European Council to solve dairy crisis

On the occasion of the European Council meeting on 18 and 19 June, Copa and Cogeca, the bodies representing European farmers and European agricultural cooperatives, are calling on the heads of state and government to set clear political guidelines for addressing the crisis in the dairy
sector.
