Declaration by Lothar Bisky, President of the European United Left/Nordic Green Left Group

The Conference of Presidents, meeting in Strasbourg on 16 July, with the aim of setting the agenda for the September plenary session and notably to decide on the timing of the vote on the President of the European Commission by the Parliament, has invited Mr Barroso to present his political programme to the Parliament on Tuesday 15 September before the vote, which should take place on Wednesday, 16 September.

Eva-Britt Svensson appointed chair of the EP Committee on Women's Rights

Swedish GUE/NGL MEP Eva-Britt Svensson has been appointed chair of the European Parliament's Committee on Women's Rights. Speaking after the vote, MEP Svensson declared "This is a strategic post for the left, where we can finally have a role in defining the agenda and working towards stronger commitments for gender equality at EU level".

EU should step up pressure to help restore democracy to Honduras

During a debate on the situation in Honduras in the European Parliament this afternoon, Spanish GUE/NGL MEP Willy Meyer, who travelled to Honduras immediately after the recent coup d'état, reiterated his condemnation of the military coup and demanded the immediate restitution of elected President José Manuel Zelaya and the return to normal democracy.

EurActiv Special Week coverage: R&D and Innovation – A route out of the crisis?

EurActiv, the independent media portal specialised in EU affairs, is next week running special week coverage of Europe’s efforts to embrace innovation as a solution to the ongoing economic downturn.

The special coverage will run from Monday 27 July until Friday 31 July, and will centre on areas where Europe can lead: green jobs, ICT and alternative energy, amongst others. The ongoing debate on the post-2010 Lisbon Agenda will also come into focus with a detailed examination of how the EU’s innovation roadmap is evolving.

Sports integrity: EGBA opposes French sports betting right

Today, the French Minister for Budget Eric Woerth is scheduled to present the draft law for online gaming to the finance committee of the French Parliament. The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) has already expressed strong reservations over key provisions of the draft law and its compatibility with EC Law, including limiting the pay back ratio (see link).

Dairy report: maintaining farmers' incomes a priority

The dairy sector continues to be in the throes of a crisis, with milk prices struggling to remain at
1993 levels. The Commission can no longer afford to wait, and must take urgent action by using intervention and other measures, in line with the mandate bestowed upon it by the Council.

According to Mr Walshe, the President of Copa, "This is an extremely acute crisis which will not
have gone away by 31 December 2009. The Council must therefore be consistent and put forward
a budget for 2010 which will ensure the dairy sector's survival."

Caritas Europa and partner organisations address EU on "Stockholm Programme"

Brussels, 16 July 2009 - Caritas Europa and five Christian partner organisations (Christian Group) have sent their recommendations on the “Stockholm Programme” to the Swedish Presidency of the EU, the European Commission and the European Council.

This Programme is intended to be the EU’s legislative agenda in the area of justice and home affairs for the next five years. It will set up the framework for EU police and customs cooperation, rescue services, criminal and civil law cooperation, asylum, migration and visa policy.
