The European Parliament today held hearings with several new commissioners replacing former members of the College of Commissioners who have taken up other positions.

Commenting on the debate with Karel De Gucht, Belgium's commissioner designate to replace Louis Michel as development commissioner for the remainder of the current Commission's mandate, Charles Goerens (PD, Luxembourg) ALDE spokesperson on the EP Development Committee said:

"Karel de Gucht demonstrated that he is a qualified, credible and committed actor for the thorny dossier of development cooperation."

La Commission européenne a rappelé aujourd'hui aux constructeurs automobiles que leurs prochains modèles ne pourront plus être vendus sur le marché européen à partir de 2011 si leur système de climatisation ne répondait pas aux nouvelles normes de réduction de gaz à effet de serre.

Le commissaire Gunther Verheugen (Entreprise) répondait ainsi à Chris DAVIES (LibDem., Royaume-Uni), coordinateur de l'ADLE au sein de la commission de l'environnement, lequel reprochait à l'industrie de renâcler pour s'adapter à la nouvelle législation européenne.

Commission lays down the law to car makers

The European Commission today warned car manufacturers that new types of vehicle cannot be sold on the European market from 2011 unless they comply with requirements to reduce global warming emissions from air conditioning systems.

Enterprise Commissioner Gunther Verheugen was responding to a challenge by Chris Davies MEP (UK, Liberal Democrat), ALDE environment spokesperson, who claimed that the car makers were challenging the Commission and trying to avoid compliance.

Caritas supports international efforts for review of the UN Convention Against Corruption

Brussels, 28 August 2009 - Caritas Europa has recently joined a group of 14 faith-based organisations in their call to the EU to strongly support the forthcoming review of the UN Convention Against Corruption. An important moment in this process will be the Conference of States parties scheduled in Doha for November of this year.

Energy-saving light bulbs: good for consumers but outstanding issues need to be addressed

From 1st September 2009, incandescent light bulbs will gradually be removed from the European market. ANEC, the European Consumer Voice in Standardisation and BEUC, the European Consumers’ Organisation, welcome the phasing-out of incandescent light bulbs. Not only will consumers benefit financially from the measure, but most importantly, they will be able to contribute to improved energy efficiency by reducing their energy consumption.
