BirdLife welcomes ECJ decision on spring hunting in Malta

10th September 2009, Malta & Brussels – In a verdict delivered today, the European Court of Justice (ECJ, case C-76/08) declared that Malta has breached European law by allowing spring hunting of Turtle Dove Streptopelia turtur and Common Quail Coturnix coturnix in the years 2004-2007.

Syngenta CEO expresses commitment to bringing technology and agronomic knowledge to African farmers

At the opening session of the Pan Africa Chemistry Network (PACN) Sustainable Water Conference in Nairobi, Kenya, Syngenta CEO, Mike Mack, emphasized the important role of technology and agronomic knowledge for the development of productive agriculture in Africa. “We are committed to support the advancement of agriculture in Africa, as part of a virtuous cycle of sustainable agricultural and rural development with the aim to raise income for farmers, suppliers and the larger community,” Mack said.

bwin / Santa Casa: ECJ delivers judgment in the bwin/Portuguese football league versus Santa Casa case

Today, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) rendered its judgment in a case involving bwin and the Portuguese football league versus the Portuguese monopolist Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa (Santa Casa). Santa Casa claimed that bwin´s sponsorship agreement with the Portuguese professional football league and accompanying advertising activities were illegal because of Santa Casa’s monopoly in providing on and offline lottery and betting services in Portugal.

Martens and Lopez-Isturiz fully support Barroso's five-year programme

The President and the Secretary General of the European People’s Party (EPP), Wilfried Martens and Antonio López-Istúriz, expressed today their full support for the five-year political program of European Commission President, José Manuel Barroso, who has been formally nominated by the European Council for a second term.

Barroso presented today for the first time in a public event in the European Parliament his “Political Guidelines for the Next Mandate”. The event was organized by the Centre for European Studies (CES), the think-tank of the EPP.
