SWIFT: Marie-Christine Vergiat denounces a new attack on people's fundamental rights

Following the plenary vote on SWIFT* in the European Parliament, Marie-Christine Vergiat, French GUE/NGL MEP, found it regrettable that a majority of members of the European Parliament voted ** against the amendment proposed by the group requiring the suspension of the agreement with the United States if they did not respect fundamental rights and protection of personal data.

Immigration: Repressive policies put a choice of life or death before us

During this morning's debate on immigration in the plenary of the European Parliament, Spanish GUE/NGL MEP, Willy Meyer declared the start of the legislature an appropriate time to revisit Europe's migration policies, stating that the current policy is based on hypocrisy and cynicism. The European project would be impossible without the help of migrants, but Meyer said, "we penalise these immigrants with our laws and criminalise them."

Barroso: GUE/NGL group said No!

"Our group cannot agree with Barroso's political vision", declared Lothar Bisky, President of GUE/NGL in his speech after the presentation of the Commissioner designate in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. In today's plenary vote*, GUE/NGL opposed the re-election of Mr Barroso as President of the European Commission.

G20 Summit: GUE/NGL calls for a root and branch overhaul of global financing

At the debate on the G20 Summit in Pittsburgh, GUE/NGL Portuguese MEP Miguel Portas criticised in plenary this morning in the European Parliament, the huge social gap that got deeper with the financial crisis: "In the last year the profits of the banks in Portugal have risen by 18%, the only thing that has exceeded this rise has been the percentage of those unemployed". He asked to "avoid empty promises and to work out measures that will see an end to bonuses, to obscure financial transactions, and to bank secrecy so that there is real transparency and people will regain trust again".
