Commission acts to ensure full implementation of rail legislation

Europe’s independent rail infrastructure managers (EIM) welcome the European Commission’s continued push to enforce EU railway laws, as the EU executive today sent formal letters to 21 countries requiring them to bring their railway systems into line with European rules.

EIM supports this demonstration of the Commission’s will to act to ensure the implementation of the First Railway Package, a set of legislation that is essential for creating competition in the European railway market and ensuring that rail remains competitive during the economic downturn.

Online gaming and betting: Danish draft legislation needs amending according to the European Commission

The European Commission issued a detailed opinion against the Danish proposal to regulate online gaming and betting on 6 October 2009. The draft legislation is intended to regulate both the on - and offline gaming and betting market in Denmark.

Safety is highest priority for Europeans on holiday

On the occasion of the European Tourism day the FIA European Bureau published the results of its I-Test survey. The scope of the survey was to find out what is important to consumers when choosing summer holiday destinations.

More than 6.000 Europeans gave their opinion on what criteria make the difference when it comes to choosing a holiday destination. The answers stem from members of 28 European automobile clubs, from which 61% were men and the average age was 46.

The Lisbon Treaty cannot hold up appointment of new Commission

Guy Verhofstadt, President of the ALDE group addressed the Presidents of both Council and Commission in a European Parliament plenary debate in Brussels today on the new prospects for full ratification of the Lisbon Treaty. Given that the outgoing Commission's term of office expires on 31st October he called on all EU institutions to commit themselves to nominating and approving the new European Commissioners as soon as possible in order to avoid a Commission without authority being unable to table key proposals on economic recovery and climate change.

Limited revenue growth and drop in investment for the telecoms sector

BRUSSELS – For the first time in past years, investments in Europe’s telecoms sector are decreasing due to economic and regulatory uncertainty, according to the latest edition of the ETNO’s annual Facts and Figures report unveiled today at ETNO’s Innovation Day in Brussels.

Although Europe’s telecoms sector has been less negatively affected by the global economic crisis than others, revenues grew in 2008 by only 0.8% and investments decreased by one per cent, the report reveals.

The Road Ahead Future of Transport – ERF calls for greater role of infrastructure

Solar Europe Initiative funding: positive but incomplete way forward

BRUSSELS, Oct. 7, 2009 – Communication on the financing of low carbon technologies: the
European Commission positively recognises the strong potential of solar photovoltaic technology
but does not sufficiently reflect industry R&D and demonstration priorities; furthermore,
significant uncertainty remains on the financing model.
