Online betting and gaming: another “exception française”?

Brussels, 13 October 2009

The French National Assembly voted today in first reading its draft on online gaming and betting. After voicing its concerns (see link) on the viability of the French draft, the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) notes that today’s vote worsens the conditions of the market opening. The draft now goes to the Senate for discussion.

£1m award to address honeybee decline

Scientists at Rothamsted Research and Warwick University have been awarded £1M by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) in partnership with Syngenta, to research the decline of honeybees.

UK government figures suggest bee numbers have fallen by 10-15% over the last 2 years; the British Beekeepers’ Association (BBKA) quotes a figure nearer 30% for 2008. Since the declines were first reported a number of factors have been suggested. Most scientists now believe that a complex of interacting factors is the most likely cause.

ENISA -1st EU Agency to deliver its web content over IPv6

The EU Agency ENISA [i.e. the European Network and Information Security Agency] now delivers its web site content over the new Internet protocol IPv6. With this action, ENISA is the first EU Agency to implement the European Commission IPv6 Action Plan.

Agency Work industry contributes to Post 2010 Lisbon Strategy discussions

EU Member States reports reveal that cogeneration is an economic option in the search for measures to close the energy efficiency gap in the 2020 energy savings target.

As Europe searches for further energy efficiency measures to achieve its 2020 savings target, COGEN Europe revealed the huge untapped potential for energy efficiency, which still remains, by using highly efficient cogeneration technology for electricity generation. At a European Parliamentary event hosted by Fiona Hall MEP, COGEN Europe presented the first analysis of Member States’ assessment of the cogeneration potential, showing that doubling the existing cogeneration capacity is economically possible.
