Commission proposes disappointing LCV emission targets

The FIA Eurocouncil is very disappointed by the latest proposal of the European Commission especially regarding the considerable delays in the implementation of LCV CO2 emission targets. The initially planned dates, 175 g/km average CO2 emissions by 2012 and 160 g/km by 2016 would have been more beneficial not only for the climate but also for the consumer thanks to the improved fuel economy.

Brussels- EU Heads of State came together in Brussels today to try to pick up the pieces
after talks collapsed amongst Finance Ministers EU last week on how to assist
developing countries tackle climate change.

Conference on speciality crops and minor uses launched by 8 food chain organisations

A Conference on speciality crops and minor uses will be held on November 4th by eight food chain organisations and will look at the impact and challenges resulting from the new European Regulation on the authorisation of plant protection products .

In practice, “minor use” applies in particular to fruits and vegetables, storage, transport and trade of cereals, seeds and flowers.

The event will be held at the COPA COGECA offices and will be attended by over 100 participants.

New Common CEN-CENELEC Director General Announced

CEN (the European Committee for Standardization) and CENELEC (the European Electrotechnical Committee for Standardization) are pleased to announce that their respective Administrative Boards have appointed Mrs Elena Santiago Cid as common Director General of CEN and CENELEC.

Smart Metering is a crucial enabler for improving the Energy Performance of Buildings

30 October 2009 – Brussels The European Smart Metering Industry Group (ESMIG) calls on the European Parliament and Council to retain the Smart Metering provisions in the re-cast of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD).
The European Parliament, in its first reading on 23 April 2009, voted clearly in favour of expediting the national roll-out of Smart Metering by requiring that Member States ensure that Smart Meters are installed in all new buildings and all buildings undergoing major renovation and whenever a meter is replaced.

EUROMETAUX WARNS OF THE RISKS OF DELOCALIZATION

· Without drastic measures, the delocalization could have a potentia impact on a large part of the 33,500 jobs in Spain.

· The sector criticizes the multiple energy policies in Europe, which impede the authentic liberalization of the power market and in the long term doesn’t offer guaranties of supply at competitive prices.

· The industry demands for the compensations contemplated and approved by the European Union, which imply national
governments to subsidize the costs of carbon emissions generated by power providers (the so-called indirect emissions).

Lisbon Treaty is a must, say Public services employers

“The sky under which we are meeting today is certainly bluer than last spring, but still not blue enough”, said CEEP President Carl Cederschiöld addressing the Tripartite Social Summit chaired by the Swedish Presidency on 29 October 2010.

“The central role played by public services in overcoming the crisis must be recognised at all levels”, Mr Cederschiöld said. “Therefore CEEP is looking forward to the full ratification of the Lisbon Treaty. This will be a fundamental step for CEEP, who sees its long-standing
demand finally recognised”.
